Who knew getting ice cream less than 24 hours after getting rejected by your mate would help elevate your mood? I groaned in pleasure as I picked my chocolate ice cream, double scooped with extra strawberry on top. Boss. That was what I could term it as. I stood in line at a small ice cream shop with Sky beside me for anothr round, the early afternoon sun warming my skin while the scent of sugar and vanilla filled the air. Life was weird. “Stop looking like that." Sky said, nudging me lightly with her elbow. I frowned. “Looking like what?” “Like someone just ran over your dog.” “I don’t have a dog.” “You get my point.” I sighed, crossing my arms as I stared at the menu like it personally offended me. “I’m fine.” She snorted. Loudly. “Yeah, and I’m the queen of England.” I shot her a flat look. “You’re very annoying, you know that?” “And you’re very in denial.” I opened my mouth to argue then closed it back. Because… she wasn’t entirely wrong. Still didn’t mean I was going to admit it out loud. “But honestly, I just don’t see how ice cream is supposed to fix anything." I muttered. " Of course, I feel a little better now but..." “It doesn’t fix it,” she said simply. “It distracts you.” I glanced at her. She shrugged. “Sometimes that’s enough.” I hummed softly, considering that. Maybe she had a point. “Next!” the vendor called out. Sky immediately stepped forward, grabbing my wrist and dragging me with her. “I’ll have two cones,” she said, flashing a bright smile. “One vanilla, one chocolate.” She turned to me. “You’re chocolate.” “I didn’t agree to that.” “You didn’t have to.” I rolled my eyes but didn’t argue further. A minute later, we stepped away from the stand, each holding a cone. I took a small bite, the cold sweetness melting on my tongue. " I don't think I can have enough of this,” I admitted reluctantly. Sky smirked. “I know.” We started walking down the street, taking our time, the earlier tension easing just a little. For a while, we didn’t say much. We just… existed. And surprisingly, it felt nice. “So,” Sky said after a moment, licking her ice cream. “Tell me everything.” I groaned. “We’re really doing this again?” “Yes.” “I already told you everything.” “No, you gave me the summary version,” she shot back. “I want details.” “There are no details.” “Liar. Tell me, did you know him before then?" I sighed dramatically. “Fine,” I muttered. “We danced. I mean, I danced. He stared at me like he wanted to kill me… or kiss me, I honestly couldn’t tell. Then he dragged me into a room, started acting all weird, saying I wasn’t safe—” Sky’s brows shot up. “He said that?” “Yeah.” “…That’s suspicious.” “I know, right?” “Then what?” I hesitated. Then exhaled slowly. “Then he rejected me.” Sky’s expression darkened instantly. “That bastard.” I huffed a small laugh. “You’re taking this more personally than I am.” “That’s because you’re trying to act like you don’t care.” “I don’t care.” “You do.” “I don’t.” “You do.” I stopped walking, turning to glare at her. “I do not care.” She stared right back at me. “You cried on the floor.” I paused. “That was different.” She raised a brow. “Okay, fine,” I groaned. “Maybe I care a little.” “A little?” she repeated. “Okay, a lot!” I snapped. “Happy?” She smiled, satisfied. “Very.” I rolled my eyes, turning and continuing down the street. “He just—” I started, then stopped, shaking my head. “I don’t get it.” Sky was quiet for a moment. Then she said, “Maybe it’s not about you.” I frowned slightly. “What do you mean?” “I mean… what if he had a reason?” I scoffed. “Yeah, sure. A stupid one.” “Still a reason.” I bit into my ice cream again, more aggressively this time. “Doesn’t matter,” I muttered. “He made his choice.” Sky studied me for a second. “And you’re okay with that?” I hesitated. Then shrugged. “I have to be.” Because what else was I supposed to do? Chase after a man who clearly didn’t want me? Yeah. No. We walked a bit further, the conversation slowly shifting to lighter things. Sky started telling me about some ridiculous customer she once had who tried to pay her in cryptocurrency, and I couldn’t help but laugh. “Wait...he was serious?” I asked, nearly choking on my ice cream. “Dead serious!” she said, laughing. “He was like, ‘It’s the future.’” “And you said?” “I said the future better come with cash.” I burst out laughing. “Okay, I like you." I said. “I know.” As we began walking back, my head snapped up as four black cars pulled up around us, boxing us in from every direction. My heart dropped. “What the—” Before I could finish, doors opened. One. Two. Three. Men stepped out. All dressed in black suits and moving with purpose. And also heading straight for me. My pulse spiked instantly. “Sky…” I whispered, instinctively stepping closer to her. “I see them,” she muttered, her voice tight. The men stopped a few feet away from us. One of them stepped forward. “You need to come with us.” he said, his tone calm but firm. My brows furrowed. “Excuse me?” “Step aside." he added, glancing at Sky. Sky didn’t move. “Or what?” she shot back. The man’s expression hardened slightly. “I suggest you don’t make this difficult.” I felt tension coil in my stomach. This wasn’t right. This wasn’t normal. “We’re not going anywhere with you." I said, my voice sharper now. The man sighed. And then the door of the fourth car opened. The men stepped back slightly, creating space. And then he stepped out. My breath caught. He was different. Dressed in a suit like the others, yes, but sharper. Cleaner. Everything about him screamed control. Power. Authority. The way he walked...This man was in charge. My wolf stirred uneasily beneath my skin. He stopped in front of us, his gaze settling on me. And smiled. Not a warm smile. Not a friendly one. “Apologies,” he said smoothly. “My men can be a bit… overzealous.” I didn’t respond. “I only wish to speak with you,” he continued. “Nothing more.” I swallowed. “And if I say no?” I asked. His smile widened slightly. Like he found that amusing. “That would be… unfortunate.” Something about the way he said it sent a chill down my spine. I shook my head. “No.” The word came out stronger than I expected. “I’m not going anywhere with you.” He sighed softly. Disappointed. “Well,” he said. “I was hoping we could do this the easy way.” My stomach dropped. “I’m afraid,” he continued, “we’ll have to do this the hard way.” He nodded once. And turned. Walking back toward his car like the decision had already been made. Like my answer didn’t matter. “Hey—!” I started as hands grabbed me. Strong. Unyielding. “What the hell?!” I shouted, struggling immediately. “Let go of me!” Another pair of hands grabbed Sky. “Get off me!” she snapped, kicking out. “You touch me again and I swear—” “Sky!” I yelled as they pulled her away from me. “Emery!” she shouted back, struggling just as hard. Panic surged through me. “No, no, let go!” I twisted, trying to break free, but their grip only tightened. And as they began to drag me to their car, a loud snarl suddenly caused us all to stumbled. It was a low, deep, terrifying snarl. It cut through the air like a blade. The men froze as their grip loosened just slightly. My wolf surged forward instantly, reacting before I could even think. My heart, the dull ache from earlier flared suddenly, sharper now. Stronger. I turned slowly and saw him. Alpha Kai Blackthorn. Standing there with his fist clenched, eyes blazing stark black. And he looked... Furious.
