His Unobtainable Mate

Chapter 1: Art of Memories

It was time for our scheduled meetups at our favorite tree but he changed his mind.

“Let’s do something different today.”

“Different like what?”

“Let’s eat at the diner.”

“Aren’t you afraid we’ll be seen by one of your pack, or by merely anyone?”

“I just want more memories with you.”

My heart just beat harder, I knew that what we have would not last for long but every moment of it was just so fantastical. We headed into Caleb’s Diner, the only Italian resto in town. We were both nervous and just pretended to be just two normal guys who wanted food. As we’re about to reach the front door, I stopped him from opening the door for me and signaled him to just continue normally. This is our first official date I guess, and I wanted it to be so memorable that I don’t want anyone or anything to ruin it.

We finally sat at the table, and honestly, this is my first date as well, I had flings before but I never really had someone I can call my boyfriend, Is Chad my boyfriend? Lol, we never actually talked about it, all these times we were just so happy at each other’s company, and I couldn’t care less.

“Have you ever dated anyone before?”

I frankly asked him.

“No one as gorgeous as you.”

Okay, he got me there, my face is now redder than the spaghetti I ordered.

“Seriously, I want to know.”

“I have never been with a human before… Father forbids it, but, I just love you so much.”

Shit, when did he learn to be so sweet?

“Though there is this one girl, a childhood friend, Tanya. Yeah, she’s a werewolf too, and…”

He stopped, but I wanted to know more even if it might sting a little.

“What? Go on.”

“Both our parents agreed to… to wed us when the time comes.”

Ouch, that’s deep.

“So she is the lucky girl.”

“Not as lucky as me for having you.”

“You have become so corny, Chad.”

“And you have become so red if you could only see yourself.”

As we’re about to finish our dinner, he suddenly looked scared and hid his face.

“That’s my sister, darn.”

I looked at the scary girl, with dark eyeliner, maroon lipstick, and pink highlights, she is rocking that aura.

“Go now, I’ll be fine here. Go!”

I can see the sadness in his gloomy eyes but we had no choice, we can’t be seen together especially by one of his family. He was able to escape without the notice of his sister and I was left here hanging, alone, and I guess the bill is now my responsibility. Great.

As I reached my home and got to my bed, I received a call from him.

“Dex, I am really sorry, I’ll make it up to you tomorrow.”

“You don’t have to make up for anything, it was fine and we had fun even if it was interrupted.”

“Still, I shouldn’t have left you alone.”

“You didn’t. ‘Cause, you’re forever in my heart.”

I cannot believe I just said that, geez.

“And you are in mine, ugh, I hate this world. I just want to be with you.”

“Then let’s be together again tomorrow and keep making memories, so that when the time com…”

“Stop Dex, don’t speak like that.”

“But it is the truth, I’m only renting on your love, I know that so I just want more moments with you, memories that I can keep with me even if you are gone to fulfill your destiny. That’s the art of memories, it doesn’t change even if the person does.”

“Dex, even if that time comes, my love for you will never change, that’s a promise.”

I hope that’s a promise he can keep.

“Enough of the drama, dog, why don’t you come here tomorrow?”

“As in your place?”

“Yes, don’t worry my family is pet lovers hahaha.”

“Keep saying that I’m a dog and I’ll show you what a dog can do.”

“Hahaha so what, are you in? We’re safer here.”

“Wait, you’re going to introduce me to your family?”

“Yes as a friend, I don’t want to compromise you.”

“Okay, see you.”

“See yah!”

My family is normal I guess, I am an only son, they know my sexuality but my Father still can’t fully accept me, my Mother, on the other hand, has been very supportive of me because she always wanted a daughter. When I was a kid, whenever my Father is out on his work, she would dress me up like a little princess, maybe that’s what made me gay, lol. It is just me and my Mother here as my father works in the capital, he comes home only twice a month, thank God.

I badly wanted to introduce Chad as my boyfriend to my Mother, I know she will approve of it but I just can’t take the risks. My mother is kind of the town’s gossiper, she just can’t stop talking.

The following day after class, we were ready to head to my home when El-Jay noticed us.

“Woah wait, where are you two going huh? Are you having private meetings behind our backs?!”

Shit, think of something fast.

“Hey calm down El-Jay, we are just working on our project in our Major subject, Chad is my partner, remember?”

It seemed like he doesn’t buy it but I knew he is just too careless to care more.

“I don’t remember but fine. Just don’t forget this Friday, it is party time!”

As we reach our front porch, Chad looked so shy.

“Can I just transform into a wolf and then you introduce me as a stray dog?”

“What?! No, my mother is a good person don’t worry.”

My Mother was in the kitchen when we walked in, I told her beforehand that I am bringing my friend today so she must be preparing a dish.

“Mom, we’re here.”

“Oh, Dex, hahaha I’m still preparing our food because earlier when I got into the town’s market, there were these policemen in the way so it causes a huge traf...”

“Mom, this is Chad, my friend.”

“Oh what a beautiful man, are you gay too? Because my Dexy is, and that’s really not a problem for me, it shouldn’t be.”

See this is what I am talking about, my Mother is like an automatic rifle once she opens her mouth.

“No Mom he’s totally straight. We’ll head up into my room now, and head down here a bit.”

“Nice to meet you, Mrs. Greene.”

“Oh what a polite man your friend is, I hope you can be more like him Dexy and it’s nice to meet you too by the way, please feel at home, our house may not be that bi…”

“Yeah Mom, we got it, thanks, later!”

I pulled Chad upstairs to go into my room because if we were to continue listening to my Mother, it would take hours.

“Your Mom is, talkative I see.”

“Yes, imagine living here, it’s like we have a walking radio.”

“I would love to imagine that, living here.”

I smiled at him as he cuddled me in my bed, he buried his face into my neck and kissed it. I could hear his every breath as we weren’t able to be this close together in our tree, we were always cautious that a random stranger would pass by and see us, but here, enclosed in these four walls and a roof, we were safe here.

I love this feeling, of him this near to me, this will be one of my favorite memory of him. In case you are wondering, yes, I locked the door.

“I know we have a special connection to that tree, but I like it more here. I can finally show you what a dog can do here.”

“And what is that, dog?”

He kissed me and our lips were instantly moving in sync. I did not want to stop, neither did he. I am just so elated, I could die of happiness.

“Does dog’s saliva really tastes this way?”

“You are so ruining the mood Dexy!”

“My Mom is the only person allowed to call me that, you dog.”

“No, if I’m your dog, you are my Dexy.”

He seemed to notice Me and Feya’s photograph in my room.

“Your real crush.”

“What?”

“Didn’t you say that you find her the most attractive in our group? Or did you forgot?”

“I only said that because she’s the first girl who talked to me on my first day.”

“And you fell in love with my best friend because she talked to you on your first day.”

“I don’t love her Dexy, I only love you, and you know I can’t say your name that time, I…”

“Geez, I’m joking.”

“I was trying so hard that time, to get you off of my mind, but you kissed me in the cheeks, and then I just wanted more of you.”

“So you kissed me on the lips when we were finally alone and then ran off like a dog.”

“Dexy, I said sorry a couple of times now, I was confused at that time, I had to fight it but now I realize I just wanted to surrender to love because I can’t resist you, truth is the very first day, you caught my eyes, that’s why I was looking at you.”

We were about to go our second round of smooching when my Mother knocked on the door. We immediately got off of each other and stood up.

“Food is served, boys! Head down now okay, we will eat before it cools, it will not be as delicious then as it is actually now, so go faster.”

We entered our dining room and had a seat. We knew we are about to listen to my Mother’s random topic, what might be it? Hmm…

“So Chad, your family is new here in McVeron, right? Where did you come from? And why did you move to this small town? Not that we don't want you here but…”

“Mom, one question at a time, he’s drowning at your questions.”

“And why are you so protective of him Dexy? Are you dating? I can’t believe you didn’t…”

Chad and I were caught off guard by my Mother’s insinuations, she can’t know about us.

“What?! Mom, no! We’re just friends, I’m just worried that you’ll scare him off that he’ll never visit again because you’re so loud.”

“Scare him off? According to your beautiful best friend Feya, I’m her favorite Mother in town because I’m so loud, you two should be thankful.”

“Thank you! Now can we eat Mom?”

That was close, but I know after we finish this dinner, my Mother is going to strike Chad with interviews again.

“So I as I was saying, where did your family come from? I wasn’t able to dig some info about you and your family because we still have an ongoing issue in town which include the Caleb’s Diner owner, can you believe that he had a huge debt to the mayor, and he proposed that he’ll give the mayor and his whole family free meals because he can’t pay fully in cash, that’s only a rumor though.”

Chad looks awkward whether he is going to answer that or just give a comment on the issue.

“Uhm… We are originally from Woodland Cove, it’s far from here… uh… we moved here because my Father work is near here, so that.”

“Oh Woodland Cove, I think I heard it before, it is smaller right, there are so many rumors too like magical creatures appearing, people disappearing and you know, stuff like that. Your family really made a great decision to just move here, because if those things are true...”

I saw the look in Chad’s eyes, he was speechless and can’t look at me directly. He must have been so scared that my Mother knows a lot even from a faraway town. I felt the need to shift the topic.

“Mom, there’s still something we need to do in my laptop upstairs before he leaves, so excuse us first, I’ll wash the dishes later Mom.”

“Oh no, go ahead I’ll take care of here, this is my only work, to take care of my beautiful son, go do what you need to do, Chad can stay for the night if he wants, just no dirty kinds of stuff, I know kids your age wants to watch adult videos together, back then in my time…”

“Mom, project, project is what he is here for, not p**n, okay?”

We got back into my room to rest before he leaves.

“Your Mom allowed me to sleep here huh?”

“Do you want to?”

“Well can you handle me at night?”

Geez, am I blushing? But just so you know guys, I’m a virgin.

“You heard my Mom, no dirty stuff for you dog.”

“Just kidding, I won’t force myself into you.”

“That still sounds dirty.”

“I meant I will never force you to do it with me if you are not ready, you’re just dirty-minded.”

“Okay, hahaha, why were you so nervous earlier, Mom’s gossip radar couldn’t possibly detect that you are one of those magical creatures.”

“I am not magical.”

“But your love is.”

Another cheesy entry by yours truly, was I able to make him blush too?

“Let’s forget about what your Mom says. It’s getting late maybe I’ll head home now, I’ll do that overnight when you are ready.”

“Ready for what? To sleep beside a dog?”

“Ready for my hotness.”

“Geez, go home now hahaha.”

I accompanied him to the road and waved goodbye, I watched him go step by step, away from me. I needed to familiarize myself with this scenario because one day, he will walk away, and he will never come back. When that time comes, all I have left were the precious memories he left me with.

As I head back to the house, my mother was waiting for me with a seldom serious look on her face.

“Dexy, I know you are old enough to choose your friends, but Woodland Cove is a very dangerous place. I am not telling you to cut ties with that boy, but I want you to please be careful.”

“Wha… Mom, do you honestly believe in those magical creatu…”

“No, but the people who disappeared were true, and they were never found again.”

“So maybe that’s why they move here.”

‘Maybe, anyway I’m just asking you to be careful son, I don’t know what I would do if I lose you. I lost a child once, I cannot do it again.”

I wanted to be angry for her judgment at Chad but I totally get where she is coming from. She had a miscarriage before, they were on a trip that night when she and Father got into an accident. I never knew the full details because I was at home at that time and did not want to come. I hugged her for assurance but no, I would never be scared of Chad, I saw his wolf form and he didn’t attack me when he could have, I mean, we were alone that time.

In bed I couldn’t help but think of those people from Woodland Cove, why did they disappear? I know Chad would never do something like that but I don’t know his family. No, stop it this is wrong, I shouldn’t be judging him or his family, my Mother is just being protective, yes.

And it’s another less boring day because I have Chad. I was about to meet him when Feya grabbed me.

“Let’s grab some coffee! I have some hot news.”

I do really want to be with Chad but I also miss my best friend, so I said yes to her and texted Chad.

“Can we cancel this afternoon? I’ll just hang out with Feya if that’s okay with you.”

He immediately replied to my text.

“What? Is there something wrong? Did you hear something from someone?”

That was weird of him.

“No, Chad, me and Feya just miss each other, nothing’s wrong.”

“Please still meet me. In our tree, after with Feya, I’ll be waiting for you.”

This is getting weird. He’s not like this but then I agreed to meet him because maybe he has a problem he wanted to tell me?

“Sure, maybe at 6?”

“I’ll wait for you.”

Feya literally carried me to our favorite spot at Caleb’s Diner, now all I could think of this place was my Mom’s rumor about the Owner and the Mayor.

“So! You know Finn, right? The varsity!?”

“The mayor’s son.”

“Yes, that’s him. He asked me on the prom!”

“Wait, when’s the prom night?”

“Duh, it’s only a month from now. So Dex, I am telling you this because I said yes and I’m not going to be able to be your date. I know we promised that if we both don’t have dates at prom, we’ll just take each other so…”

“No worries Feya, our promise was if we both don’t have someone, but you found yourself a date so I’m happy for you.”

“Awww, you’re really the best! I’ll treat you tomorrow at our hang out.”

“Oh, tomorrow is Friday I forgot. Anyways, I must say. Finn is the mayor’s son, you know the controversies behind that family.”

“Yes but Dex! He is so hunky and his arms are so huge!”

“Wait when did this start? I mean when did you actually talk to him?”

“It was only last week, you know when there were volleyball and football practice so we were dismissed at seven, kind of already dark I know. I was alone at the activity grounds because I forgot my towel when I heard a stray dog’s howl. It was creepy…”

“A howl? Of a dog?”

“Yes, kind of sounds like a wolf but that’s not the point, Finn was there and heard it too and offered to walk me home and that’s it he asked for my number and we started talking.”

A wolf, near the campus grounds, could it be? No, Chad said his pack is all harmless.

“Hey, you seem off, weren’t you listening to the whole time I was talking!? That was so rude…”

“I am listening Feya, I was just worried about what you two heard.”

“Duh, probably that was just some sad and angry homeless dog.”

We continue eating but I cannot seem to focus, what was that howl, a werewolf, why was it near the school, can it be Chad?

We said goodbyes to each other after a while because I still need to meet Chad but suddenly, my Mother called me.

“Dexy, Are you with Chad right now?”

“No, why?”

“Stop seeing him.”

“What?! Why?! What’s happening?”

“Remember I asked him why they moved here, he said because his father’s work is near here in our town. I checked it, his father is crippled and is unemployed.”

“Why would you investigate about his family Mom?”

“I said it, Woodland Cove is a dangerous place, and your friend is a liar, what could a man in a wheelchair be working for? He is clearly hiding the real reason why they moved here to our town. Dexy, they are nothing but danger.”

I wish I could just tell the real reason why they moved here so my Mother will stop but she can’t know that they are werewolves and that it was only a fight for territory.

“Mom, maybe he lied for a good reason, or he was ashamed. Don’t be paranoid.”

“Regardless, until we can’t be sure of it, stay away from that boy, understand?”

“Geez Mom, fine.”

I dropped the call but the truth is, it got me, I don’t want to have doubts about Chad but I’m starting to, so tonight, I am getting real answers.

I headed to our tree and just as he said, he was waiting for me.

“Hey.”

He quickly turned at me and hugged me.

“I thought you wouldn’t come.”

“Why wouldn’t I?”

“I thought you were… ignoring me.”

“I’m going to be honest Chad, I have some questions.”

“What is it?”

“Why haven’t you told me about your Father? Now my Mom thinks you are a liar for saying your Father work is here when actually, it’s not.”

“I couldn’t say that we were driven out by other werewolves to your Mom, you know that.”

“Then you should’ve just said you were kicked out because of money.”

“Okay, I’m sorry I was nervous that time, is it bad? Is she mad at me?”

“She wants me to stop being friends with you.”

“And?”

“And what?”

“You’ll obey her?”

“I honestly don’t know Chad, it feels like you are hiding something from me, like the disappearances in your old hometown, was it because of your family, and why did Feya hear a howl near the campus the other night, was it you? I thought you were the only one in your pack who goes to Starcade University?”

“Okay, Dex calm down, please. It wasn’t me, it’s probably my sister.”

“Why is she here if she’s not studying?”

“She’s looking out for me, they noticed I always go home late and that’s only because I am seeing you, so my Father probably asked her to follow me that day.”

“That day only?”

“I honestly don’t know.”

Suddenly, I heard a growl in the bush near us, and as I looked at it, there was a scary werewolf that is angrily and ragingly looking at me.
