# Chapter 4:
Three days.
Daniel hadn't slept for three days.
Every time he closed his eyes, he heard it.
Knock...
Knock...
Knock...
Someone knocking on the front door.
Slow.
Patient.
Endless.
The first night, he checked.
Nobody was there.
The second night, he called the police.
They searched the hallway.
Nothing.
The third night...
He refused to open the door.
The knocking continued.
Knock...
Knock...
Knock...
Maya sat curled up on the couch, hugging her knees.
"Please..." she whispered.
"Tell me you hear it too."
Daniel swallowed hard.
"I hear it."
Neither of them moved.
Then...
The knocking stopped.
Silence.
Relief washed over them.
Until...
Knock...
This time...
It came from inside the apartment.
The bedroom door.
Maya screamed.
Daniel slowly turned toward the hallway.
The bedroom door was closed.
Neither of them had gone near it.
Knock...
Knock...
Knock...
Someone was inside the room.
Daniel grabbed a kitchen knife.
His hands shook so badly he almost dropped it.
"I'm calling the police."
His phone had no signal.
Maya's phone was completely dead.
The television turned on by itself.
Static filled the screen.
Then a message appeared.
LET ME IN.
The lights flickered.
The knocking became louder.
BANG.
BANG.
BANG.
The bedroom door burst open.
Nothing.
The room was empty.
Daniel let out a shaky laugh.
"See?"
"Nobody's—"
He froze.
Mud.
Fresh wet footprints.
One pair.
Leading from the bedroom...
Toward them.
Step.
Step.
Step.
The footprints stopped inches away from Maya.
She looked down.
Then screamed.
There was one more footprint.
On the ceiling.
Daniel slowly raised his head.
Nothing.
When he looked back down...
The footprints had disappeared.
Only one thing remained.
A single silver necklace.
The one he had buried with me.
His face turned white.
"I threw this into the grave..."
Maya backed away.
"No..."
"No..."
She suddenly pointed toward the window.
Daniel turned.
Outside...
Across the street...
A woman stood beneath the flickering streetlight.
Long black hair covered her face.
Her white dress was stained with dirt.
She wasn't moving.
She was simply watching.
Daniel rushed to the window.
"Who are you?!"
The streetlight blinked.
Once.
Twice.
When it came back on...
She was gone.
His breathing became uneven.
He turned around.
Maya wasn't beside him anymore.
"Maya?"
No answer.
"Maya!"
He searched every room.
The bathroom.
The kitchen.
The balcony.
Nothing.
Then...
A frightened whisper came from the closet.
"Daniel..."
He yanked the closet door open.
Maya was inside.
Curled into a ball.
Crying uncontrollably.
"I didn't move," she whispered.
"I've been in here the whole time."
Daniel frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
"You were just standing beside me."
She looked up at him.
"No..."
Her lips trembled.
"That wasn't me."
At that exact moment...
Someone laughed.
Softly.
The sound came from beneath the floorboards.
Then my voice echoed through the apartment.
"You should have buried me deeper."
The entire apartment went silent.
Neither of them noticed...
A small crack had appeared beneath the living room floor.
Dark soil slowly began rising through it.
As though something underneath...
Was trying to crawl out.
