Although he was unreliable, the man behind the door was even less trustworthy. Faced with manipulation, Hetty decided it was better to follow this stranger than be plotted against.
Taking several deep breaths and gearing up to jump, she hesitated at the last moment.
Clutching the windowsill, she confessed, her voice trembling, "I can't do it. I have acrophobia!"
"Don't be scared. I'll catch you," Alvar assured her with unwavering conviction.
His deep voice and steadfast gaze instilled a sudden, inexplicable trust in Hetty. As if bewitched, her fear of heights vanished, and she leaped towards him.
The intense sensation of falling scared Hetty into shutting her eyes tight, but she landed safely in Alvar's arms. The impact forced Alvar to stagger back a few steps, nearly losing his balance.
Despite the stumble, he held Hetty tight, ensuring she remained unharmed.
Hetty slowly opened her eyes to meet his deep gaze, his deep blue eyes captivating like the vast ocean. She momentarily forgot to get up, mesmerized by his stare.
"Aren't you going to get up? While I don't mind you looking at me like this, I doubt that man would agree," Alvar said with a light chuckle, patting Hetty's shoulder.
Following Alvar's gesture, Hetty looked up towards the window.
"Hetty Amelia, what are you doing!" that man shouted angrily from the window.
Realizing she was still pressing down on Alvar, Hetty quickly scrambled off him, defiantly facing the man by the window. "What I do is none of your business."
His anger intensified. "Hetty Amelia, you sneak around with another man while we're supposed to be on a date? Let's see how you explain this to your father."
The mention of her father fueled Hetty's anger further. If not for the effects of the drug, she would have dealt severely with that sleazy man.
Seeing Hetty's silence, he assumed she was scared and adopted a condescending demeanor. "Just come back here, apologize, and I might let this slide."
Hetty clenched her fists, her gaze sharp as she retorted, "Who do you think you are to demand like that?"
"Hetty Amelia!" he barked fiercely, glaring at her. "Catch them!"
His bodyguard, heeding his command, started sprinting towards Hetty.
"We need to leave now, or it'll be troublesome," Alvar said as he stood up, casually dusting off some grass from his clothes and stepping in front of Hetty.
While Alvar was confident in his abilities, escaping with a drugged Hetty would be challenging if they were surrounded.
Alvar flipped off the man upstairs, grabbed Hetty's hand, and dashed towards the door.
The cool night breeze sobered Hetty slightly as it brushed against her face.
Watching him lead her run, Hetty wasn't sure if following him was the right thing to do, but her heart screamed for her to keep running and not stop.
"Stop!" The bodyguard relentlessly pursued them.
Alvar leaped onto a sleek, heavy motorcycle parked at the curb and tossed the only helmet to Hetty.
"Put this on. Get on!" he yelled as the bike roared to life.
Without a word, Hetty donned the helmet, sat behind him, and clung tightly to his waist. Moments later, they quickly arrived at a somewhat shabby apartment building.
Once inside, Hetty frantically searched for the bathroom, the prolonged close contact with him intensifying the effects of the drug.
She was sure she would throw herself at him without hesitation if she waited any longer!
Alvar leaned against the bathroom door, watching Hetty douse herself with cold water in the bathtub. "If you need help, I'm here."
Hetty had no desire to sleep with a stranger just because of the drugs.
"No need."
"I'd be happy to help a beauty like you. If you change your mind, just let me know," Alvar said, closing the door gently behind him after his offer.
About an hour later, as the drug's effects began to fade, Hetty got out of the bathtub. Her wet clothes clung to her, subtly outlining her graceful figure.
Wrapping herself in a towel, Hetty slowly opened the door and looked around for him.
"Need any help? I'd be glad to serve you," he said, closing his book casually and tossing it aside, standing up with a suggestive look.
Alvar had noticed that the effects of the drug had worn off on Hetty, but he couldn't resist teasing her a bit.
Hetty gripped the towel tighter, instinctively stepping back. She had just managed to control herself. She didn't want to lose her senses again under his provocation.
"No! I don't think I need that kind of help from you.
"But there is something I do need your help with," Hetty said awkwardly, trying to tidy her disheveled hair. "Could you help me find some clothes? Mine are all wet."
Alvar glanced over Hetty's figure before heading straight to the bedroom.
After he left, Hetty looked around the apartment, her gaze drawn to the book on the sofa. She walked over and picked up the book Alvar had been reading. It was a textbook on software development.
"Are you still in college?" Hetty asked, surprised, as Alvar walked out of the bedroom.
