Chapter 13: The Choice Jayce ran through red-lit corridors. Alarms shrieked. His bare feet slapped on cold concrete. He'd lost his shoes in the car crash. Blood from cuts on his soles left a trail behind him. He didn't know the layout. Every hallway looked the same. He took turns randomly. Left. Right. Down stairs. Through doors that hadn't locked yet. Guards shouted behind him. Boots pounding. Getting closer. He ducked into a side room. Storage closet. Cleaning supplies. Mops. Buckets. He pressed against the wall. Held his breath. Footsteps passed. Voices calling coordinates. Searching. Jayce waited thirty seconds. Emerged. Kept moving. He found stairs going down. Took them three at a time. His ribs screamed with every step.
