Surely Wren's parents would've come out to meet Blair by now?
Without another thought Blair cleared her throat and began her question.
"Wren? Where are your parents? I'd love to meet them."
There was a moment of silence, although seconds ago there was light and colour around them it seemed Blair's question sucked it all away.
Once again Wren's face soured, his voice holding a very small tremble as he answered.
"My father passed away before I was born and...my mother...was killed when I was young."
He took a large breath of air.
"By vampires."
Blair froze, the comfortable air between them becoming thick.
Inside her stomach, there was a twist and she couldn't tell what the feeling it was that she felt.
Her shaking hands reached up to his face, lightly touching his cheeks almost scared if she put any pressure he'd break.
Wren didn't push her away or stop her, just gazed into the icyness in her eyes.
"I'm...so sorry you're mother passed and..."
She wanted to say she was sorry that he was going to be married to her, sorry that she was a vampire, sorry he even had to look at her.
But before she could finish and apologise, his hand wrapped around hers on his cheek. A small smile on his face,
"Don't you dare start apologising Blair."
He took a deep breath and closed his eyes.
"I admit when I was first told I was going to wed a vampire I...reacted badly but...seeing you enter the tent the other night."
Wren's eyes met hers once more when he could feel her hand tremble against his skin, confidently speaking his truth.
"I could see your hesitance, and I realised you were just like me, put on a road you didn't ask for."
Blair only nodded along to his words, unable to make a sentence leave her lips.
"And when I saw your eyes, brighter than starlight...I couldn't hate you or condemn you for your species."
"I wouldn't have blamed you if you did."
As the words came out, Wren gently took her hand from his cheek and pulled her into his arms.
Wrapping her in a hug, hushing her.
"It wasn't you who took my mother from me, and I'm sure witches have hurt you too."
He was right, Blair considered her Coven. While a lot of the vampires in her Coven were living many had been injured and lost their partners at the hands of Witches and Werewolves.
It had never been personal to Blair, so instead of replying she simply nodded against his chest.
They sat in silence for a moment, his hand running through her raven hair.
"What about your parents?"
Blair said nothing at first, causing him to look down at her face which seemed to be lost in thought.
"My father...I never met, I'm not sure if he's alive either and my mother...She was gone shortly after I was born. I was raised by—" For a moment there was silence as she searched for the courage to say his name. Slowly she continued, cursing her stomach for twisting.
"Cole, the vampire who delivered me to Alrick...I think he's my mothers distant cousin."
Wren noticed the void of emotion as she spoke about her family member, whether it was how she was taught or not having any actual feelings towards Cole was unclear.
"He's nothing compared to Gramps though."
"Gramps?"
Blair tilted her head to the side, watching as the sky seemed to have turned to a dark grey. It was going to rain soon.
"Gramps, Cole's father, was...I'm not sure what the word is, he would sometimes be kind and caring then other times couldn't control his rage and hatred. It was only towards me, I think...I think because I look like my mother he might've cared a little, at least until he found out about Derrick and I."
Wren didn't speak, just kept trying to soothe her by running his hand through her hair. Before long Blair spoke again, feeling more comfortable after his efforts.
"Someone's coming."
After a few seconds Alrick sprinted towards them, panting heavily and only stopping completely when seeing the two. If he had been a stranger walking by, to him they would've looked like two teenagers in love embracing each-other.
But it was more odd to Alrick knowing it was Wren and Blair hidden by the brush, he hadn't expected to see such a sight so soon in their companionship.
Wren and Blair sat up, clearing their throats like they'd been caught red handed. Alrick shook his head after regaining his composure, sounding like a concerned father more than anything.
"What happened? Miss Fauna is boiling and all the girls are freaking out..."
Before Wren could get the words out, Blair was on her feet and bowing.
"It was my fault, I joined the class of girls because I wanted to see what they were doing, When Miss Fauna stated I couldn't join because I had no magic like witches...I felt the need to prove her otherwise. After showing my potential..."
Blair seemed to lose the rest of the words, clearly trying not to throw anyone under the bus or create more discourse. Wren wasn't having any of it though, standing quickly and grabbing her shoulder, her lifting straight up as a response to his touch which felt protective. Him stating loudly,
"They began cursing Blair, calling her ill words! I told them to stop and took her away from those...vipers."
