The Bond Of Deception

1476 Words
The Moon hung low, painting silver streaks across the forest as Lyra slipped quietly from her room. Her parents’ threats still rang in her ears, but they had only fanned the flames of her fury. She clenched her fists, teeth pressing into her lower lip. Adera had stolen everything she wanted—not just Kael’s attention, but the possibility of claiming him entirely as her mate. Her steps were silent, deliberate. She knew the paths Kael and his wolves patrolled. She knew where the shadows could hide her, where no one would notice her slipping through the trees like a whisper of malice. Her lips curved into a thin smile. This time, she would ensure victory. Not through charm or force—but through something far older, far darker. ⸻ Before she approached the old woman, Lyra needed something from Adera. She found her outside, pacing along the garden path, wolf senses humming faintly beneath her skin. Adera had been restless all evening, thinking, watching the horizon as though danger could appear from the wind itself. Lyra’s steps crunched softly against the gravel. Adera spun at the sound. “Lyra?” she asked cautiously. Lyra’s expression was carefully composed—remorse, humility, even fear in her eyes. “I… I wanted to apologize,” Lyra began, voice trembling slightly, “for everything I’ve done.” Adera’s wolf flared, suspicious. “Everything? Or only what you think I know about?” Lyra lowered her gaze, pretending shame. “Everything. I… I’ve been foolish, jealous, childish. I shouldn’t have…” Her voice faltered. Adera folded her arms, suspicion tightening. “And yet you’re here.” Lyra smiled softly, an almost angelic smile that did not reach her eyes. “Because if… if I truly am sorry, I need to make amends. Here. Now.” Adera’s wolf growled low in her mind, and her instincts screamed to step back, to keep distance. But curiosity—ever her weakness—made her hesitate. “Fine,” Adera said slowly. “But make it quick.” ⸻ Lyra reached out suddenly—not to touch, but to snatch a strand of Adera’s hair as she walked by. Adera froze. “What—Lyra, what are you doing?!” “It’s… for the apology,” Lyra lied, voice trembling theatrically. “A sign of trust. If this proves I’m sincere, you’ll understand.” Adera recoiled, anger flaring. “You—give that back!” But Lyra was gone before she could reach her. She held the hair tightly as she ran through shadowed streets, toward the old woman’s home hidden deep within the outskirts of the pack’s territory. The old woman waited, shrouded in thick gray robes, eyes glimmering like wet stones in the moonlight. “You’ve brought it?” the woman asked in a rasping voice. Lyra handed the hair over, bowing slightly. “Yes. This is hers. Her essence. Her bond.” The old woman’s fingers brushed the strands. “You understand what this will do?” Lyra nodded eagerly. “Make him believe I am his mate. Fully. Irrevocably.” The old woman chuckled softly, a sound like rustling leaves. “And Kael? He is a strong one. But the heart can be deceived… for a time.” Lyra’s hands shook with anticipation. “I can do this. I will do this.” ⸻ The ritual began under the glow of the rising Moon. Lyra held the hair in one hand, the other raised toward the sky. She chanted in a language older than the oldest packs. Symbols formed in the air like mist, wrapping around her fingers, weaving threads that pulsed with a subtle silver light. The old woman handed her a small vial filled with a thick, swirling liquid. “Drink when the incantation ends. Then the bond will solidify. The Alpha will feel it. And when he looks at you… he will believe.” Lyra’s lips pressed to the vial. She drank. Pain and warmth crashed over her at once. Her heartbeat synced with an invisible pulse she could not see, could not yet fully understand—but it was Kael’s heartbeat, drawn into her, binding her to him as though she were the mate the Moon had claimed. The ritual ended. Lyra collapsed briefly, gasping, feeling her body changed in a way that frightened and exhilarated her. ⸻ The next morning, she approached Kael. He was outside, in the clearing where Adera had trained before, wolf senses awake and ready. He smelled her presence almost before she entered the sunlit path. “Lyra?” Kael asked, confusion tightening his features. “What are you doing here?” Her pulse thrummed—not from nerves, but from the bond. It was real, tangible, filling her chest. When she looked at him, she could feel it responding. He stepped forward, hand raised instinctively. “I—” Lyra smiled, her voice soft, sultry, confident. “I… I’m here, Kael. For you.” His eyes narrowed. Something was off. His wolf growled in warning. “No,” Kael whispered. “No, this… it can’t be.” The bond pulsed, warm, deep, insistent. It wrapped around him, tugging at his mind, making him falter. His wolf snarled in protest, sensing the lie—but his body, heart, and instincts betrayed him. Lyra’s lips curved into a victorious smile. “See? I’m yours. I am your mate.” Kael shook his head violently. “No! Adera—” His voice cracked mid-word, confusion and disbelief flooding him. “This… this bond—it’s wrong. It doesn’t feel—right.” But Lyra leaned closer, letting the bond hum. Every nerve in Kael’s body screamed at him, but he couldn’t break it. It was as if the Moon itself whispered that she was the mate, even though everything in his past, everything in his reborn memory screamed otherwise. ⸻ Meanwhile, Adera trained alone in the forest, unaware of the manipulation that had begun. Her wolf stirred uneasily, reacting to Kael’s confusion from miles away. She felt a pull—something unnatural in the bond energy surrounding him. Her chest tightened. Danger. She stopped, hands on her knees, sweat dripping from her brow. Her wolf urged her to run, to find him, but the path was blocked by her own lack of knowledge. She closed her eyes. Focused. Listened. The scent of Lyra, tainted with magic, hit her first—sweet, wrong, impossible. Then the pulse of Kael’s real bond, distorted but present. Her heart raced. The wolf inside her howled—a low, menacing growl that echoed in her mind. He is being deceived. Adera took off at a sprint, limbs moving faster than they had ever moved before. Her wolf guided her, instincts sharp and unwavering. She would reach him before the lie fully solidified. She had to. ⸻ Kael struggled as Lyra’s magic wrapped around him like chains of silk. “Stop,” he whispered aloud, voice shaking. “I don’t… I can’t—” Lyra laughed softly, victory in her eyes. “Just accept it, Kael. Don’t fight what you feel.” “I—” His voice broke. His wolf roared in frustration. This is wrong! This is not her! The bond pulsed, insistent, but there was a flicker of resistance—a memory, a heartbeat, a past life echo. Kael staggered back, eyes scanning the clearing for what he couldn’t yet identify. And then he smelled her. Adera. ⸻ Far away, Adera’s wolf had guided her straight to them. She appeared in the clearing like a force of nature, eyes blazing, fur bristling, muscles taut and ready. Lyra froze. Her magic held—but for how long? “You will not touch him,” Adera said, voice calm but terrifying. “You will not deceive him.” Lyra’s smirk faltered. “You? You think—” Adera stepped forward. “I don’t think. I know.” The air shimmered with tension. Wolves growled, magic hummed, and the Moon watched silently. Kael felt it—the true bond. The one that belonged to Adera. It surged, pushing back the false threads. His chest tightened, heart pounding as his wolf roared in agreement. She is mine. Lyra stumbled back, the incantation faltering under the strength of Kael and Adera’s connection. Panic flared in her eyes. “This isn’t over,” she hissed, retreating. Adera’s wolf growled low. “No. It’s just beginning.” Kael took her hand, steadying her. “I—I know it was her,” he said quietly, still shaking from the confusion. “I just… I couldn’t see through it.” Adera smiled faintly. “You will now. Always.” Above, the Moon cast silver light over the clearing, the wolves, and the start of a battle that would not end with words alone.
