8 Paul pulled into the carpark at the restaurant he’d booked two weeks before. “Lauren, I’ve got something for you before we go in.” He’d debated about where to give her the present. The light wasn’t as good in the carpark as in the restaurant, but he had wanted some privacy in case he’d got things wrong. He reached into the back seat, dragged the wrapped box forward, and gave it to Lauren. “Happy birthday, sweetheart.” She held the box up to her ear. He laid a hand on her arm. “I don’t think I’d rattle this one.” Her eyes shone in the dark and she carefully removed the tape and paper from the professionally wrapped box.
