The wrong kind of saving

976 Words
Three The rain poured down in heavy torrents, each drop hitting my raincoat like meteors. “Detective Selena. We’ve got nothing, no tracks, not one tiny bit of evidence” a cop said and I nodded to myself. Of course, the thing who killed the kid wasn’t a human. Or wasn’t completely human? The rain refused to stop. It kept pouring harder drenching my coat and making my eyelids heavy. I could pick up the scent of something metallic—what was wrong with me? Why is my sense of smell suddenly heightened? I followed the scent, venturing deeper into the woods. It was dark so I switched on my flashlight attached to my gun. I kept following it until I saw a figure on the ground, immobile. I pointed my flashlight. Oh God It was Rhys, he was unconscious and bleeding from where I had shot him earlier, he looked dead but I could see the faint movement of his chest. For a moment the temptation to finish him off filled me. I wanted to get rid of this scum. But I couldn’t bring myself to kill him, I leaned down and pushed back his shaggy dark hair from his face. For a moment I was stunned by how handsome he looked. I had been around hot guys my life and my previous life. Hot werewolves, hot cops, hot men. But Rhys was…….I couldn’t describe how good-looking he was. I tried lifting him but he was too heavy. I sighed, I didn’t want him to die of cold. I brought out my walk-in talkie for backup. A strong hand stopped me before I could make the call. I turned to see those green eyes staring at me pleadingly. “Don’t” he begged. “Anything but calling other cops. Leave me to die if that's what you are going to do” I was tempted to actually leave but I didn’t want to, and I couldn’t give a particular reason why. “Can you walk?”I said and he groaned and stumbled to his knees. “I am sorry”‘I said honestly and meant it. “You are doing your job,” he said and I sighed. “I almost killed you and wanted to still do it when I saw you here,” I said. “Don’t worry” he groaned and got to his feet. “We’re are the bad guys right?” He said sarcastically and I shrugged. “Yes, you are” Did he think I wouldn’t agree to that? Rhys' green eyes darkened. “Why not kill me then?” He asked and I shrugged. Honestly, I didn’t know why I found it hard. “I don’t know. Maybe I’ll do it later but for now, get to your feet. I’ll take you home, I have a car somewhere and I can drive us home” I said and he nodded. It wasn’t an easy walk to where my car was and I had to explain to the other cops who saw us that he was robbed. The drive home was eerily quiet save for the labored and harsh breathing of Rhys in the back seat. He looked pale and he was sweating. I stepped harder on the gas and the car lurched forward. When I reached my house I pushed open the door and hurriedly walked Rhys in and put him on the examination table and I lifted his shirt to….. Holy mother of……. How did the moon goddess even take time to make someone perfect? His abs were well developed and….. “What are you doing?” came Rhys strained voice and I snapped out of my haze and raised his shirt. I gasped when I saw the wound. It looked yellow and it was still bleeding. “Cut the bullet out” Rhys growled and I stared at him near tears of frustration. “I can’t……that’s extreme,” I said and Rhys shook his head. “If you can shoot me with wolfsbane bullets then you can certainly remove it. Just do it, get a knife and cut it out” he said and I nodded. I picked up a knife and did as he asked. I closed my eyes as his screams filled the room. “I am sorry, I am so sorry” I pleaded. He held my hand tightly. “Selena” he moaned tiredly and I absentmindedly stroked his hair. “It’s okay,” he said, his grip still firm on mine. “We’ll catch Kael and he’ll pay for all that he has done to you.” “I am sorry,” I said again and he nodded sleepily. Even as his head rolled limply to the side in sleep his hands still kept to mine tightly. If someone had told me that I would be holding the hands of a werewolf again I would have called them a liar or probably slapped them but here I was standing beside one, holding his hand while he slept. I gently pried my hands free dropped the bloody knife into a bowl and went to wash my hands. At least getting to know Rhys brought me to my utmost goal. To meet Kael and make him pay, to make sure he suffers the suffering I went through in his hands. To make sure he kisses my feet then kill him afterwards. I would also show the Blood Moon pack who I was now. I would make them all pay. Rhys mumbled my name in his sleep and for some reason. It made me smile, I wasn’t even supposed to keep a werewolf in my house. I had vowed to make them all pay but Rhys here had helped me pick up my purpose—finding Alpha Kael and making him pay.
