Chapter 4: The Board Meeting

1210 Words
Derek Martinez was escorted out of Sterling Industries by security at three PM that afternoon. He was holding a cardboard box containing his personal belongings, his face a mask of rage and confusion. The entire office was talking about it. No one knew exactly why Derek had been fired so suddenly, but rumors were flying. Some people whispered that he had been involved in money laundering. Others said he had been caught embezzling funds. The truth was simpler and more brutal: he had finally picked a fight with someone more powerful than himself. Raymond watched from his new office as Derek was led away. The company had given him a small office on the executive floor, nothing elaborate, but it was a start. Tomorrow, he would be introduced to the board of directors. Tonight, he needed to prepare. Sofia called him at four PM. "Did you know about this?" she asked immediately, referring to Derek's termination. "Know about what?" Raymond played dumb, using his intelligence and charisma skills to keep his voice steady. "Derek was fired today. And Margaret Sullivan announced that a new board member would be joining us tomorrow. She said it was someone with a personal interest in ensuring the company maintains high ethical standards. Everyone is saying it was you who reported Derek." Raymond paused. "I did report him, yes. For assault. You witnessed it yourself." "Raymond," Sofia said, her voice filled with something like awe. "How did you manage to get Derek fired so quickly? Do you have connections I do not know about?" "I told the truth," Raymond said. "The truth is a powerful tool." "There is something else," Sofia continued. "I have been researching you. The security guard mentioned your name in connection with Margaret's closed-door meeting this morning. Are you involved in the company in some way beyond being a janitor?" Raymond knew he could not lie to her indefinitely. But he was not ready to reveal everything yet. "I may have recently come into some money," he said carefully. "And I may have made an investment in the company. But I cannot discuss the details yet. Will you trust me?" There was a long silence on the other end of the line. "Yes," Sofia finally said. "I will trust you. But you will have to tell me eventually." "I will," Raymond promised. The next morning, Raymond walked into the Sterling Industries boardroom for the first time. The long table was surrounded by ten chairs, and eight of them were already occupied. Margaret Sullivan sat at the head of the table. "Ladies and gentlemen," Margaret announced as Raymond entered, "I would like to introduce Raymond Stone, our newest member of the board of directors." The room went silent. Raymond recognized some faces from the company, including James Warner, the CFO, and Patricia Chen, the head of operations. Sofia was not present, which Raymond found odd. "Mr. Stone has made a significant investment in our company," Margaret continued, "and will be bringing fresh perspectives to our decision-making process. I hope you will all welcome him warmly." One of the board members, an older man named Gerald Price, leaned forward. "Margaret, I think we deserve more explanation than that. How is it that someone unknown to this company suddenly becomes a major shareholder and board member?" "That is not really your concern," Margaret replied coolly. "What matters is that Mr. Stone has the right to be here. And his investment represents confidence in the company's future." Raymond spoke for the first time, his voice calm and measured. "I came to Sterling Industries as a janitor. I worked here and observed how the company operates. I saw areas where we could improve, and I saw potential for growth. My investment is based on those observations and my belief in the team that leads this company." "But we know nothing about you," Gerald persisted. "How do we know you are not here to sabotage the company or steal our secrets?" "You do not," Raymond said simply. "But you will come to know me over time. And you will see that my interests are aligned with the company's interests. Because if Sterling Industries succeeds, so do I." James Warner smiled slightly. He understood the economics of it. The board meeting continued for two hours. They discussed quarterly earnings, new product development, market expansion, and staffing changes. Raymond listened more than he spoke, but when he did speak, his words were insightful and well-reasoned. The Charisma Boost and Intelligence skills the system had given him were proving invaluable. By the end of the meeting, even Gerald Price seemed less hostile. After the meeting ended, Raymond was walking toward the elevator when Sofia appeared, seemingly from nowhere. "Hello, Mr. Board Member," she said with a smile. "I believe congratulations are in order." "You heard about it," Raymond said. "The entire executive floor heard about it," Sofia replied. "Raymond, I need to know what is going on. How did you become a board member? You were cleaning floors two days ago." Raymond took her arm gently and led her to a private conference room. He closed the door behind them. "I came into some money," he said. "More money than I expected. And I invested it in this company because I believe in its future. I also invested it because I wanted to protect myself and the people I care about from people like Derek." "That is still vague," Sofia said, but she was smiling. "But I trust you. And I think it is wonderful that you have turned your life around so quickly. You deserve it." She extended her hand, and Raymond took it. When their hands touched, he felt a spark of something. Attraction, certainly, but something more. A connection. [Secondary Mission Progress: 60% Complete,] the system reported. "Sofia," Raymond said, "there is something I would like to ask you. Would you have dinner with me tonight?" "Yes," Sofia said immediately. "I would like that." That evening, Raymond took Sofia to the finest restaurant in the city. He wore his new suit, and Sofia wore a red dress that made her look like a goddess. They talked about their lives, their dreams, their hopes for the future. Sofia told him about growing up in a wealthy family that had lost everything in a bad investment. She had fought her way back up through sheer determination and intelligence. "I know what it is like to be invisible," she said. "My family treated me like I was a failure when I was poor. When I succeeded and made my own money, suddenly they wanted to know me again. That is when I realized that true wealth is not about money. It is about character and integrity." Raymond listened to every word, and he realized that Sofia was exactly the kind of woman he needed in his life. But as they were leaving the restaurant, Raymond received a text message from an unknown number: [This is Derek. You may have won this round, but the war is just beginning. I will destroy you and everything you care about. I swear it on my family name.] What was Derek planning? And how would Raymond protect Sofia from the danger that was coming?
