Lucas’s POV
I know we have to time this part perfectly otherwise it’d be game over, especially as I still can’t shift, and Etta is hurt. The footsteps are getting closer. Even without being in wolf form, our hearing is impeccable and heightened. I turn to nod at Etta in her wolf form and we both take a deep breath of air before going under water. Even though we are under water, I can still hear the men although it is muffled slightly.
“Troy and Hunter will not be happy about this. How did they escape?”
“I’m not taking the blame for this one. She’s never tried to escape before.”
“Well, I overheard Asher tell Troy that her mate bond with Jaxon is only getting stronger.”
“That’s impossible surely. Normally, after being apart for long, the bond slowly fades before breaking altogether.”
“I’m just telling you what I heard.”
“Come on, lets head north of here. That’s where her instincts would tell her to go.”
Slowly, the sounds of men’s voices and footsteps become faint before they vanished altogether. We swam over to the other side of the river before getting out. It’s hard to swim when your ankles are still in shackles. We lie exhausted on the riverbank. I can see the array of thoughts and feelings that Etta was experiencing in her eyes after hearing the guard’s conversation. Now she knew the truth. But if they catch her, they’d wipe her memory again and I can’t let that happen. She is the rightful Luna, and I will put my life on the line to save hers. I’m still reluctant to speak out loud in case they hear us so continue to mind link.
Etta, we should find somewhere to camp for the night. There’s a cave just a little bit further down the river.
She just nods and stands back on all fours. I clamber onto her back again, making sure I still had the backpack. Etta runs, following the directions I give her, but it feels like she already knows the way. I can start to feel that my wolf is waking up again which is a huge relief. I decide to try to mind link Jaxon. No doubt he will going out of his mind and will having a tough time controlling his wolf.
Hey Jax. We made it out. We’re both ok. My ankles are still shackled but I can feel my wolf stirring. I’ll try to keep you updated but I feel its best if we hide for a while. No doubt Hunter and Troy will demand to search our territory first to look for her.
DON’T YOU DARE KEEP ME AWAY FROM HER LUCAS.
I know you and your wolf are both desperate to see her but I’m thinking of hers and our packs safety.
TELL ME WHERE YOU GUYS ARE... Please.
I’m sorry Jax but I’m standing my ground on this one. You know it is the safest thing to do right now. She’ll be in less danger if no one knows where we are. You know that they’d be able to tell if you were lying about her whereabouts.
I know Lucas. Thank you.
I shut off the mind link and block him out. I can tell he feels defeated but I’m only thinking about our safety. If Hunter or Troy suspect that Jaxon knows our whereabouts, they will try any trick in the book to get him to spill the details and I refuse to let that happen. Without me even realising, we make it to the cave and head inside it. I jump off Etta’s back and she stares at the shackles around my ankles. Before I can register anything, she has gripped them with her teeth and is trying to yank them off but she ended up just dragging me along the floor. She looked stumped. She led down, with the shackles still in her mouth and began gnawing and chewing the shackles. After about 5 minutes, the shackle on my left ankle broke. The glimmer of excitement in her eyes were evident as she quickly started doing the same on my right ankle. Before long, both shackles were off, and I felt free. It was the best feeling that I’ve ever experienced in my life.
Etta pulled the backpack with her into the dark corner of the cave and I turned my back so I was facing the entrance. I could hear her bones cracking as she shifted back into her human form and quickly got dressed. Once I was certain that she was dressed, I ran to her and pulled her into a hug.
“Thank you, Etta.”
She hugged me back tightly.
