The Escape

Etta’s POV I’ve done nothing since watch the clock and listen to the seconds as they tick on by. The adrenaline in my body is now beyond a joke and I can’t keep my hands still. Over the past couple of weeks, I have noticed a pattern with the guards. So, I know exactly when to head to Luca’s room. Fingers crossed they follow the same pattern as they have been doing. At 1pm, all the guards in the corridor go down for lunch and it takes 10 minutes for the other guards to arrive, so that is my window. I sit up in bed pretending to read and, sure enough, as soon as it hits 1pm, the guards leave. I slowly creep out of bed, grab my bag with some spare clothes in and a bottle of water. We’ve got this Etta. My wolf wills me on. I put pillows under the cover of the bed to make it look like I’m under the covers, making sure that I also put the silver bands under the cover as well. I tip toe to the door and look down the corridor. Luca, I’m just leaving my room. I wanted to give him a heads up that I’ll be there very shortly. It doesn’t even take me 30 seconds to get to his room. Every single sound makes me wince and I’m sure it’s just my heartbeat that I can hear. I walked into Luca’s room and hide to the side so I’m not in view of the doorway. I look at him and a slight smile grows on his face. We don’t say a word to each other, but both look down at the silver bands around his ankle. It’ll be hard to take them off his ankle, but as I’m studying them, I notice that they aren’t secure to the wall. The bands aren’t properly secured to the wall, so our best option is to pull them off of the wall and, once we are safe, look at getting them off your ankles. Luca looks at me and simply nods. He starts to shuffle quietly to see if it’ll come away from the wall without making a noise and sure enough, they do. We both smile. So far so good, but I’m very aware of the time. We have a little under 5 minutes until the next guards arrive. Now my attention goes to the window. There are iron bars covering the window. I study it intently. But Luca is one step ahead of me. Etta. I c**k my head to look at him. There is no way to get out of the window due to the metal bars. But, when they dragged me in here, I noticed that the room next door has a fire escape. My eyes light up. Of course, there is, I had literally just passed it on the way to his room but didn’t even register, but then realisation washes over me. That’s the stairway that the guards use. His face drops. If we go through the fire escape but go up a level and wait for the guards to arrive. We should then be able to go back down the stairs. It’ll be tight with timings because as soon as they realise that we are missing, they’ll start looking for us. Luca nods. That’s it. It is the only way to get out quietly, but we’ll have to do it quickly. He looks at his legs and there is no way, he’d be able to walk with the shackles on, so I’ll have to shift now. Luca knows what I'm going to do, so he turns to look at the wall out of respect, which I appreciate. I carefully remove my clothes and place them in the bag. I haven't shifted yet, but as soon as I do, you'll need to grab the bag on the floor which has clothes and water in it, then jump on my back. Luca just simply nods whilst looking at the wall. It's been at least a month since I've shifted. I close my eyes and let my wolf take control. I picture her in my mind. She is such a beautiful wolf and has a grit of determination about her. My bones start cracking and moving into place. My nose soon turns into a snout as my hands become paws. I'm now standing in my wolf form and all of my senses are heightened. I can hear the guards outside on their smoking break talking but they'll be in soon. I can smell the stench of old blood from this room and I can feel we need to get moving. Luca, come on. The guards will be back soon. And with that, he flips around, puts the bag on his back and hops onto my back in one swift movement. I was shocked at how fast he moved, especially since his ankles are still in shackles. I begin to sniff the air and the guards that were outside are starting to file back in. I tentatively put my head round the door frame but now is not the time to be cautious. I bolt to the door where the fire escape is and run up one flight of stairs and wait. Luca looked taken aback at how quick I was and I just smiled. At the top of the stairs, on the floor, was a lead pipe. Luca lent down and picked it up whilst I look at him puzzled. As I can't shift, I thought it'd be best to be prepared. I simply nodded. The adrenaline starts to course through my body as the sound of guards on the stairs becomes louder. I can tell that Luca is nervous as well. I'm starting to wonder whether this is the best option, but when it comes down to it, we don't have another way, so I shake my head as an attempt to get rid of the doubts. Luca slowly strokes the top of my head as to say he understands. I feel a need to mindlink Jaxon, just to let him know, that at the moment, we are alright and to say thank you in case the worst happens. Jaxon. I'm sorry for blocking you out but it was necessary. We're not out of the building yet but I have shifted and Luca is on my back. We managed to get the shackles off of the wall, but not his ankles. We're going to figure that out as soon as we're safe. I will do everything in my power to protect Luca and get him to safety. In case I'm unsuccessful, I just wanted you to know that I'm so thankful for everything you have done. I'm so grateful that we have managed to mindlink. It's strange, but I feel so connected to you and would love nothing more than to give you a massive hug as my show of appreciation. I will be blocking you out again and for that I'm sorry. Until we meet again my Jax, love your little wolf.
