CHAPTER 10: "Rebecca"
I sat on my bed with my Bible closed in my lap.
My phone was face down beside me.
Should I pray it?
The prayer I’ve been scared to pray.
God, if he’s not for me... take him away.
Take the feelings. Take the hope. Take Ola out of my life if he’s not from You.
The words tasted bitter.
Because what if He actually did it?
What if I woke up tomorrow and Ola was gone?
No more "you up?" texts.
No more verses.
No more "we’re surviving the middle together."
My chest got tight just thinking about it.
I know he’s just a friend.
But what if I’m missing out on what I prayed for?
What if God sent him and I’m too blind to see it?
But God...
What if he ISN’T for me?
What if You’re doing something and I’m holding on too tight?
What if I pray that prayer and You say yes?
I didn’t know which was worse.
Losing him.
Or keeping him and getting my heart broken later.
A buzz made me jump.
My phone lit up.
Ola: you up?
I stared at it.
My heart was already raw from the prayer I hadn’t said yet.
And now he was here.
Kemi: yeah...
Kemi: I was just thinking
Ola: can I tell you something?
Ola: it might sound weird
I swallowed. Weird how?
Kemi: tell me
Ola: When I was praying tonight... I saw you.
Ola: Not with my eyes.
Ola: But in my spirit.
Ola: God showed me a story.
Ola: Genesis. Rebecca.
Ola: I saw you in that story, Kemi.
I dropped my phone.
Rebecca?
The girl at the well?
God, was that You answering before I even prayed?
---
I opened my Bible app with shaking hands.
Genesis 24.
I started reading.
"The servant took ten camels... and went to Nahor."
"He made the camels kneel down near the well..."_
"Let the young woman to whom I say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who says, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels’—let her be the one..."
I paused.
Rebecca didn’t know she was being watched.
She just came to draw water. Like any other day.
She wasn’t trying to impress anyone. She wasn’t performing.
She was just... faithful.
Tears filled my eyes.
God, is that me?
Is that what You see when You look at me?
A girl at the well. Tired. Drawing water. Thinking no one notices.
I kept reading.
"Before he had finished praying, Rebecca came out..."
"She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up."
And then the servant asked for water._
And she said: "Drink, my lord," and quickly let down her jar.
I whispered it out loud.
"Drink, my lord."
She gave first.
She didn’t wait to be asked twice.
She didn’t say "I’m tired" or "I have my own problems".
She saw a need and she met it.
When was the last time I did that?
At work today, my boss was rude and I almost snapped.
But I didn’t. I smiled. I served.
Was that me being Rebecca?
Or was I just surviving?
My chest hurt.
What if I’m not Rebecca?
What if I’m just a girl in Benghazi trying to survive?
What if there’s no Isaac. No story. No ending.
What if the middle is all there is?
But then I read the next part.
Rebecca ran. She told her family. She left her home.
She didn’t know where she was going, but she said yes.
She trusted.
Even in the middle of not knowing.
I closed my eyes.
*My Prayer:*
God, I don’t know what this means.
I don’t know if I’m Rebecca or if I’m just tired.
But if You’re asking me to be faithful with little...
Help me.
Give me Rebecca’s heart.
A heart that serves without being asked.
A heart that says "Drink, my lord" even when my jar is almost empty too.
A heart that trusts You in the waiting.
And God...
If there’s an Isaac for me one day...
Help me to be ready.
But for now, just help me to be faithful here.
At this well. In this middle.
---
The next morning, I woke up different.
The bills were still on the table.
Work was still hard.
The middle was still the middle.
But something shifted.
At work, an old man dropped his bag.
Without thinking, I ran to help him pick it up.
"Drink, my lord," I heard in my head and smiled.
I texted Ola.
Kemi: I read it.
Kemi: "Drink, my lord."
Kemi: I’m going to try to have Rebecca’s heart.
Ola: That’s all I wanted to hear ❤️
Ola: We’re in this together. One well at a time.
I smiled.
Maybe Ola wasn’t saying "you’re mine".
Maybe he was saying "God sees you at the well".
And maybe that was better.
Because in the middle, being seen by God was everything.
