___________ 29/06/26 8:30pm MAYFIELD STREET: CARTER HOUSE. The house was small but welcoming, with a mini garden in its backyard—its living room looking shabby but kind of neat. And on the small four-seater dining table, sat the Carter family—eating and chatting happily like the contented family they were. When they were done, Nora helped her mother “Adena” do the dishes before retiring to her room. ___________ Inside the small room, Nora laid on the bed, staring at the ceiling while replaying what happened in Professor Rhys's class earlier that morning. The way his gaze had flickered to her during the lecture. It made her cheeks burn. She knew it was wrong, forbidden, students shouldn't feel this way about professors, but her heart didn’t care about rules. And with a muffled giggle, she pressed her face into the pillow beside her, smiling like never before. She liked him more than she should. More than anyone could imagine. And with that thought, she finally drifted to sleep. ___________ BLAKINGSON'S The next morning, school was alive as always—students rushed to their classes. And inside the Literature class, the air felt heavy, no one was talking as Professor Rhys stood at the front, arms crossed, while the class representative “James” collected the Assignment from each student. Meanwhile, Nora, who had handed hers over, sat at the back as usual, stealing glances at him while he was busy watching James. From his Ice-blue eyes, down to his thin lips, all the way to his captivating jawline, and as she watched him silently, she found herself liking him more and more. She didn't understand what it was about him that she liked, or when or how she began liking him, all she knew was that she likes him, and she'll always do. “Is that all?. He questioned—his voice cold as if he was having a bad day, and without warning, his gaze shifted to her as if telling her that he could actually feel her gaze on him, and immediately their gaze met, Nora's eyes widened in panic. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't look away, and with a creased brow, he turned towards her fully which made her force her gaze down. And for a while she could feel his intense gaze on her—leaving her heart pounding against her chest while her cheeks turned crimson due to how anxious she was. If you don't submit now don't even think about coming to my office later. He warned and seeing that all the students remained quiet, he left with James trailing behind him. _______________ SCHOOL HALLWAY After classes were over, Nora left class heading to the cafeteria by herself. Life at Blakingson's wasn't easy, she had no seatmate nor friends, as it is said “Once you're here on scholarship you're an outcast” even the other kids on scholarship were scared to hang out with fellow scholarship students. So Nora sits alone in class, and dine alone during lunch time. “What the heck is wrong with you woman!. Nora was yet to reach the stairs at the end of the hallway when she heard a voice yell out angrily, which made her gasp in fright because she wasn't expecting that since the hallway was always quiet around that time of day. “Listen to me, I'm no longer a child. I'll decide when I want to get married, period!. “I don't care!, You're my father's wife not my mother so tell that woman you invited to my house to leave, I don't want to meet her by the time I return, or I'll do something you and I will regret. Came the voice again, which made Nora swallow down her saliva in fright. She could tell the person was angry and barely trying to keep it together, but the hallway wasn't the type of place to make such calls. It might seem quiet but anyone could walk in on you, and with a soft sigh, she made to slip into the corner and walk away without glancing at the caller but immediately she did, she bumped into something or rather someone. Which made her quickly stumble back to see whom the person was, but the moment her eyes met with his cold blue ones and his wrinkled forehead, a light gasp escaped her slightly patted lips as realization hit her hard that it was actually the one man she desired most at the moment. And the way his frown grew wider upon seeing her made her heart beat accelerate rapidly. Am sorry sir, she managed to form before hastily trying to walk past him, but before she could even manage to do so, his big hand had grab her arm as he pulled her back gently. And with furrowed brows, he muttered grumpily. “What did you hear?. He questioned, which scared her to the core coz she really didn't mean to eavesdrop. I—I was only passing by, I wasn't eavesdropping. She defended, which made him let go of her arm before walking away, and once he was gone, Nora couldn't help but lean over the arm he had held as she sniff in his smell. And with a warm smile as if she had won a lottery, she giggled shyly before going her way. _______________ CAFETERIA Sitting at the cafeteria, Nora kept stealing glances at people, although she's gotten used to sitting alone but she can't help but feel lonely. And just as she was sitting there feeling lonely, her eyes landed on someone sitting a few tables from her, and immediately Nora's gaze met her's, Nora quickly averted her gaze from the girl. She was none other than Scarlet, the one who asked professor Rhys a naughty question the other day. She was a bully who derives joy from making others miserable, just because her grandfather was the school's highest funder, she feels like everyone owes her a special kind of respect, which makes her feels like some God when the other students fear her. __________
