Beneath Gilded Eyes

The banquet hall shimmered under the golden glow of chandeliers shaped like enchanted roses, their petals moving faintly with every ripple of magic in the air. The air was scented with exotic spices and aged bloodwine, and the ceilings loomed high, covered in tapestries that depicted the glorious history of the Vampire Kingdom. Soft music from an elegant string quartet filled the silence between conversations, but it could not drown out the whispers that now followed one particular prince more than any other. Kenneth. His entrance alongside Queen Seraphina had all but stolen the breath of the hall. Clad in a fitted obsidian suit embroidered with dark crimson thread and silver trim, Kenneth looked more celestial than vampiric. His blue eyes—a stark contrast to every red-eyed noble present—glowed subtly under the crystal lights, drawing gazes both awestruck and suspicious. Several noble daughters had already tried to follow him with their eyes. One even whispered, "Is he even real...?" From where the princes sat in a raised semicircular throne of obsidian seats, the elder brothers watched the events unfold. Aurelius was the first to speak, his voice low and controlled. "The room stares at him like he's the King himself." Darien chuckled quietly. "He does look... extraordinary tonight." Lucien leaned back with a wine glass in hand, his smirk playful. "If they only knew how much of a child he still is." Sevrin said nothing, his gaze resting not on Kenneth, but on the reactions of the noblewomen. The noble families began introducing their daughters, all carefully groomed in shimmering silks and jewel-draped gowns. Some were bold, stepping forward to bow with smiles. Others curtsied shyly, hoping their beauty alone would draw a prince's attention. Aurelius entertained them with polite disinterest. He stood when necessary, made sharp, regal remarks, and sat back down without so much as a flicker of warmth. One of the girls, a brunette from House Vaellor, tried to flatter him: "My Lord Aurelius, your victory in the Southern District was legendary. My father says none have commanded like you." Aurelius gave a cold smile. "Then your father must be a man of discernment." Lucien laughed into his glass. "Gods, Aurelius, don’t charm them all at once." Darien greeted them with nods and a few kind but short words. He wasn't much for talking. Still, the girls swooned over his quiet strength. Sevrin, when approached, merely bowed and said, "Thank you," before looking away. Meanwhile, Kenneth was seated next to Queen Seraphina, hands clasped together, clearly trying not to fidget. He wasn't nervous—not really. But the attention made him uncomfortable. He didn’t like how many people were staring at him. "Kenneth," his mother whispered with a smile, "you’re attracting more eyes than the heir to the throne." He turned toward her. "Why though? I'm just sitting here." Seraphina smoothed his sleeve gently. "Because beauty has always made people curious. Yours is... unique." Kenneth blinked, looking around. A girl in a pale violet gown waved subtly from across the room. He waved back without thinking. "Who's that?" he asked. "One of the daughters of House Sylenth," the Queen replied. "Her family is powerful." Kenneth tilted his head. "She looks nice. Maybe she'd be friends with me and Seraphine." Seraphina chuckled softly, hiding her mouth behind her goblet. "Yes, maybe." From across the hall, Marek sat rigidly. His red eyes locked on Kenneth with a mixture of resentment and unease. He remembered the last time he sparred with him. The power Kenneth displayed that day wasn't just overwhelming—it was unnatural. The King rose to his feet at last. The hall dimmed as attention turned sharply toward the high dais. He raised a goblet. "Let it be known, that tonight, we celebrate the victorious return of our sons—Aurelius, Darien, Lucien, and Sevrin. Through blood, fire, and shadow, they have brought glory to our kingdom." The crowd erupted in applause. The princes stood and bowed slightly. The King continued, "And as time marches ever onward, so too must our lineage. Thus, I invite the noble houses of Velmorth, Sylenth, Veynar, and Arcos to present their daughters this season—that the future rulers of this realm may find suitable unions to fortify our dominion." Gasps and murmurs of excitement filled the hall. Then his gaze turned to Kenneth. "And to the youngest of my sons... I say only this: May the fire you carry never consume you, but light the path for all that follow." The crowd went quiet. Kenneth blinked. His heart thudded once, heavy. He didn’t understand what the King meant. But he felt it. Deep. Lucien looked sideways at Darien. "What the hell does that mean?" Darien didn’t reply. He was still staring at Kenneth. The King sat again, lifting his wine. Kenneth leaned toward his mother. "Why did he say that?" Seraphina gave him a long look. "Because he sees it, too. Even if he doesn't know what it means yet." Minutes later, Kenneth excused himself. He walked out into the garden beyond the banquet hall, his polished shoes quiet on the marble steps. Moonlight poured over the fountains and flowers, casting the world in silver. He stood by a small reflective pond, staring at his own face. The blue eyes. The skin that didn’t belong. The feeling in his chest that he couldn’t name. "What am I really?" he whispered. The wind didn’t answer. But it carried petals across the water. And in their wake, the silence deepened.
