13 A Letter Home October 12, 1955 Dear Grandma, I’m writing to let you know that the Army is not so bad as I thought it would be. I survived boot camp and that first year. When I got orders for overseas, I thought my life was really over. But coming to the Philippines turned out to be what you would call ‘a blessing.’ I’m up here in the mountains, in a town called Baguio. It’s not too hot and we hardly have any mosquitoes. Camp John Hay is the closest thing to heaven that a military installation can be. There’s a watering hole off base called the Igloo. That’s where I met Isabel, Isabel Aurora Lim.
