Sarah's heart raced as she tried to back away from the man, her feet stumbling over the tangled vines. But the man was quicker, and he lunged towards her with a manic gleam in his eyes.
She screamed as she felt his hands wrap around her neck, cutting off her air supply. The whispers grew louder, and she realized that the man was somehow amplifying them.
Sarah fought back with all her strength, clawing at his face and kicking at his shins. But the man was too strong, and he pushed her down onto the forest floor.
Her head hit a tree root with a sickening c***k, and for a moment, everything went black. When she opened her eyes again, she was disoriented, with no idea how much time had passed.
The man was gone, and she was alone in the forest once again. But she could still hear the whispers, a constant buzzing in the back of her mind.
She tried to stand up, but her head spun and her legs felt weak. She stumbled forward, grasping onto tree trunks for support. The trees seemed to sway and dance around her, mocking her with their twisted limbs.
Sarah stumbled forward, her heart pounding in her chest. She didn't know where she was going, but she knew she had to get away from the whispers.
As she stumbled forward, she saw a light in the distance. It flickered like a flame, beckoning her forward. She stumbled towards it, her feet tripping over roots and rocks.
When she reached the light, she saw that it was a lantern, hanging from a wooden post. Beside it was a sign that read "Safe Haven."
Sarah stumbled towards the door, her heart pounding in her chest. She banged on the door with all her strength, screaming for help.
The door opened, and a kind-faced woman appeared, her eyes filled with concern.
"Are you alright?" she asked, ushering Sarah inside.
Sarah collapsed onto a nearby couch, tears streaming down her face.
"I don't know what's happening to me," she gasped. "The forest, the whispers...I can't take it anymore."
The woman listened patiently, nodding along as Sarah poured out her story. When she finished, the woman placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"I know what you're going through," she said. "I've seen it happen to others before. But you're safe here. You're in the Forest of Whispers, but you're in the Safe Haven now."
Sarah's eyes widened in surprise. She had never heard of a safe haven in the Forest of Whispers before.
"How did you find this place?" she asked, her voice trembling.
The woman smiled kindly. "I was lost in the forest too, just like you. But I stumbled upon this place, and I knew it was meant to be a sanctuary for others like us."
Sarah looked around the room, taking in the cozy furnishings and warm fire crackling in the hearth. For the first time in days, she felt a glimmer of hope.
"Thank you," she whispered, her eyes brimming with tears.
The woman smiled, patting her hand. "You're safe now, Sarah. And we're going to help you find your way out of the forest."
