I slowly stood up, feeling nervous as if I was in trouble along with the other three. River didn't glance my way, something I was secretly grateful for. Instead, her sight was on the three standing there awkwardly.
Like children who got caught sticking their hand in the cookie jar.
"Seba!" River snaps, looking at the younger male, who instantly stood up from his chair, body going rigid.
"Y-yes Alpha?"
River's eyes narrowed as she approached closer. "Are you not the Beta of this pack?" Sebastian gave a stiff nod. "So tell me how this happened with you in charge? I taught you better didn't I?"
I watch as Sebastian lowered his eyes whether it was out of respect or guilt, I wasn't sure. All I know was River was not someone to be messed with.
"And you," I watch as she turned in Michael next, who went as rigid as well. "I know you're our Enforcer, but to do that to Samira's guest!"
Michael cleared his throat. "I had a good reason, Alpha." He murmurs. River let out a growl in her chest that causes Michael to look at the ground. The only one who didn't seem phased was Adrian.
Omega, I reminded myself. An Alpha-like wolf without the qualities of being dominant and aggressive. Almost seem too surreal there was an Omega standing right before me.
"Spit it out then!" River's growl brought my attention back to the situation at hand. I wanted to say it was alright and that I'm sure Michael did have a good reason, but seeing how dominant River was, my wolf urged us to be quiet for now.
Before Michael could give his reason, the door to the larger trail burst open. "Sorry for keeping you waiting Fenrir!" Liz's cheery voice broke the atmosphere. "I made you a few grilled cheese sandwiches--" The moment her feet hit the bottom of the steps, she glanced up to see us and River.
Her bright blue eyes widen. "River!" She greets happily. "You showed up quickly!" And like that, River relaxed upon seeing her Submissive.
"Was I not supposed to after what you told me?" She tilts her head as Liz bestowed a cheek kiss upon her Alpha. It was endearing.
Michael and Sebastian seemed to relax now that River's anger seem to dissipate for the moment.
"Some help you were," Michael grumble to Adrian. "Thought you could calm her ass down and shit."
Adrian merely lifted an eyebrow. "Oh, I did. That's how upset she was." Michael coughed a bit awkwardly.
Taking the plate of food from Liz, I began to munch on one, not realizing how hungry I was up to this point.
I didn't notice how River watched me, a little amused before looking at Adrian. "Is he alright, Ri?" She asks.
Adrian nodded. "Yes. No real damage and I'm sure his headache is gone by now." She smiles.
I glanced up at the two once realizing they were speaking about me.
You are going to get us killed one day you clueless idïot. My wolf grumbles in my head.
Hey, listen... There's food and I'm starving. I grumped back.
River turns to Michael and Sebastian. "So, tell me why."
Michael sighs, his body relaxing now that he wasn't in any immediate danger his Alpha was going to throttle him. "I was doing my patrol, as usual, making sure nothing was out of the ordinary before I caught the scent of something rotten."
I stopped in mid-chew as the word triggered me back to what happened earlier.
The body in the woods.
Michael continued, never noticing my reaction. "I was following it to a part of the woods, near the back road we take to get here before catching the kid having some panic attack." He explains. "I could sense his wolf was close to the surface and not sure what would happen, I figure the best thing was to knock him out." He cross his arms over his chest as he looked at me.
"Took me two hits." There was a hint of impression in his voice. I puff up at the underlying compliment. I don't know why as I didn't know Michael very well but he looked strong, seemed strong, and if he was impressed it took two hits to take us down, well, I'll take it.
River looked a little perturbed on the other hand. "What of the body?"
"Once making sure he was okay, I found the body couple of feet away. At first, I thought it was him but the body had been decaying for a month or so." His nose wrinkles. "Whatever attacked it, River, it wasn't a wolf that's for sure."
River frowns more. "On Samira's property too?" Michael nods. The Alpha let out a soft curse word as she rubs a hand down her face.
I was a little lost on what was happening. I get it that a dead body turning up on Samira's property was bad but was it bad in a way that if the police got involved was her pack in danger? Or was it the Hunters?
The female Alpha sighs, rubbing a hand down her face. "Alright... Alright." She took a deep breath and I didn't realize the tension in the air slowly began to clear up.
"Michael, take the Cousins with you, later on, to scout out what possibly did this." Said River.
Michael bristles at this. "I would rather take Will, hell, even Mathias over the Cousins."
River only laughs a bit dryly. "Right but they love to hunt and it's pretty much their expertise." She points out. Michael only grunts out but says nothing else.
Waving a hand to dismiss the four wolves, the Alpha finally turns to me with an apologetic smile.
"Hello, Fenrir. It's nice to finally meet you though I wish it had been under better circumstances." Her eyes narrowed at Michael, who only held his hands up as he walked off with Liz and the others.
"Just doing my damn job." A grumbled reply came only to grunt when. Liz smacked him on his chest.
"Just wait till Sam comes here." She warns him. Michael grimaces at this.
Shaking her head, River took the seat Sebastian was occupying earlier. "So, Samira has told me a great deal about you. How you came to the farm and now helping her out around the place."
I nodded quietly, swallowing the bit of food in my mouth. "Y-yeah. She was telling me I was going to meet you and your pack soon." I was a bit nervous after all this was an Alpha.
Female Alphas were rare and had to be plenty strong to not just hold onto their position as an Alpha but keep the balance in the pack. River seemed plenty strong.
River nods as she leans back in the camping chair. "Eventually yes. I have just been busy with errands and all." She gives a pleasant smile. "So tell me about yourself. Samira has mentioned you been lone wolfing it for some time as you told her."
I have another slow nod. "Ah, y-yeah." I cleared my throat. The Wolf and I had once been elated at the idea of possibly joining River's pack but now the thought of it...
It still would've been nice but somewhere along the way we both grew strongly attached to Samira and the thought of leaving her didn't sit well with us.
"I grew up in a close-knit pack," I began. "Mix with werewolves and humans. Our Alpha was my great, great, great grandfather."
River nods. "Your parents were werewolves too?"
I nodded. "Dad had been a werewolf since he was a teenager." At this River arched an eyebrow. "After mom had me, she turn into a werewolf once I was weaned off," I explained. I could see River's brow frown some.
I scratch the back of my head. I knew how my pack was, wasn't like any other pack. Packs were made up of different people, who were brought together by an Alpha. People who have been Bitten later in their life.
To bite and change someone as young as a teenager was pretty much forbidden. Changing anyone caused for a very long discussion, but my pack thought differently.
"How old were you, Fenrir?" Asked River. I looked at her, unable to make out the emotion on her face. It was like she was wearing a mask.
"Uhm," I fidget a bit nervously. "F-fourteen I believed." My teeth clamp down on my lower lip. "I had six older siblings. Two of them didn't survive the change. One opted to stay human and the rest of us accepted the Bite."
"So, you're given a choice?" River looked a bit mildly disturbed now.
I nodded. "Y-yeah... I.." I frown more. "I wanted to be with my family."
"Even though one of your siblings didn't change?" Asked River.
I nodded.
The Alpha sighed as she clicks her tongue. "You know it's very unusual for a pack to act like that. A werewolf going around biting and forcing change on a human is pretty much forbidden especially when it comes to children." Her face darkens some.
I fidget a bit, unsure of how to feel. I didn't know why there was guilt since I wasn't the one who was doing the biting. Growing up in an environment like that, you wanted to be a werewolf. To not want to be, was almost ludicrous. Even I thought my older brother who didn't want the change, was crazy. We all thought being a werewolf was awesome.
It wasn't till later as I grew older, that it wasn't so.
"So where's your pack now?" River brought me out of my thoughts.
I looked up at her before looking away, my hands fiddling with one another. "Gone.." I whispered.
"Oh," River bit her lower lip. "I'm sorry."
I shrugged, trying to shut off those feelings of sadness and depression. My wolf sent me calming vibes to help keep my emotions in check.
"Well, is there anything you like to ask me?" River changed the subject to lighten up the mood. I was just grateful she did.
Looking at her, I glanced around their campsite. "How many you got in your pack?" I asked curiously.
Popping her lips, the Alpha took a moment to ponder. "About.. eighteen a believe."
My eyes widen. Whoa, that was a pretty big pack. "Cool." I grin. River returns it with her grin.
"Majority of them live in the city." She explains. "Michael, the Cousins, the Spaniard, and Xion live out here with me. My children tend to visit on the weekends but I'll go to them every day as they're with our only human pack member."
I perked up at this. "You have kids?" I was surprised. I shouldn't be.
After all, wolf shifters had that over werewolves. They could get pregnant and carry to full term because they weren't chained to the laws of the moon. Meanwhile, a female werewolf that could become pregnant and carry full term was out of the question.
I heard it was because the shifting of our bones and organs when we turn into a wolf, was too violent that the fetus was always miscarried. This explains why there was never a natural-born werewolf.
"Yes, yes they're my pride and joy." River's face lit up fondly. "Aiden and Charlie, twins." She chuckles. "They stay with Alys and her daughter Ariel."
"I...I would love to meet them one day." I said. I always liked kids and got along with them great. It could've been due to the younger kids from my former pack. I use to love chasing them around in my wolf form and giving them piggyback rides. Kids were just full of innocence and happiness.
River nods. "One day." She clasps her hands on her lap. "I know the pack got off on the wrong foot today but I do hope you come around more and hang around with us." She smiles. "It has been a while since we last had a new face around here and with the full moon coming up pretty soon, perhaps you would like to join us for a run?" She asks.
"Heck yes!" I jumped up, unable to contain both our excitement. River's eyes widen and I coughed and sat back down. "Uhm, yes. If.. if that's not too much to ask." I grin meekly.
River laughs but nods. "For sure, Fenrir! You're more than welcome to run with us." She smiles warmly at me. I had butterflies in my stomach.
It had been so long. So, so long since I had a pack to run with during the full moon. I could feel my Wolf's excitement and anticipation growing stronger.
Before River could say anything, there was a loud neighing of a horse and the thundering of hooves. I watch the Alpha instantly get up and curiously turned as well. I spotted a familiar dark chestnut color horse and a very disgruntled rider.
"Samira.." I breathed out. I almost forgot about her and how worried she must've been when she probably couldn't find me. I instantly felt guilty as I quickly put my plate to the side and got up to greet both her and Bananas.
Samira slows the horse down as she drew closer, Bananas giving a few snorts and grunts. "Fen?!" She calls out worriedly making my heart stop.
I was shocked at the nickname she used for me. I haven't heard my old nickname be used for a while.
The Wolf growling in my head to snap out of it, had me moving again to help her down from the horse.
Strong arms wrap around my neck as Samira hugs me close to her small body. "I was so worried!" She whines into my neck. "When I couldn't find you and the dogs were all riled up." Her face buried into my neck and my nose was assaulted by her soft scent of orchids and grass.
"Ah," my brain short-circuited from the fact that Samira was hugging me and it felt so damn nice. I haven't been hugged like this in a long time and I just wanted to relish in it for as long as I could.
The way Samira fit up against me, her small body, and how she was practically tip-toeing up. If I had straightened up, I wonder if she would dangle from my neck from how short she was.
My wolf wanted to know as well and urge me to do so but instead, I just slowly wrap my arms around her waist, holding her close.
It felt nice.
It felt wonderful.
Soon Samira was pulling back, hands guiding up my neck and up along my face before cupping my cheeks. "Are you okay?" Worriness was still lace in her voice.
I looked into her hazy brown eyes despite they were focused off to the side.
I nodded. "I'm okay." My voice was soft before I press my forehead against hers. "I'm alright. I'm sorry for worrying you."
Feeling Samira press her forehead against mine, she shook her head. "It's not your fault. I'm glad you're just alright."
The Wolf and I were just dying from this affection. I didn't realize how much I missed something like this till now. I was craving more.
Sadly it ended sooner than I wanted as the brunette released me and took a step away from me, glaring in what I think she thought was River's direction.
"There best be a good explanation River Ravensdale of the Exiled." She snarls.
I was taken by surprise by how quickly her sweet face went from looking worried to twisting into such an angry expression. Her snarl sent shivers down my spine, once again reminding me how angry Samira could be.
Bananas was becoming agitated as he began shifting from side to side and I move to hold onto his reins, trying to soothe him. It was then I notice Samira pretty much rode him bareback and now looking at her, she had no shoes on either. Had she been that worried she just jumped on a horse and rode out to find me?
I was touched. I couldn't help it. The Wolf was purring in my head, obviously touched as well.
The air seemed to grow heavy again with that strong smell of the earth as the hair on my arms started to stand up when the feel of an electric discharge began to build up. I held onto the reins of Bananas as something seem to spook him.
"Samira.." River took a step forward, her eyes glowing bright yellow gold. The Wolf in me growled and we step forward a bit on instincts to protect Samira. It was dumb to even challenge an Alpha but we couldn't help it.
I flinch just a bit when River's eyes glance over at me in a warning. I tried to hold her stare but regretfully glance down at the ground in submission, a bit angry at myself for not being able to hold her stare for long.
I didn't see something shove River back unexpectedly as Samira took a step forward. It was the growling from River that made me snap my head up to see the female Alpha struggling to keep herself under control.
"You. Hurt. Him." Chills ran down my spine at how cold Samira's voice came out. "Explain. Now." The air was growing thick and heavy, almost like something was trying to suffocate us.
Baring her canines at the brunette before her, River shifted on her feet, hands balled up into fists before her eyes closed, breathing in and out deeply a few times. I watched as her body starts to relax albeit slowly but enough she got herself under control.
"Michael didn't mean it." River's voice came out strained. "Fenrir was having some kind of a panic attack and he took measures to knock him out. Who knows if he would've lost control or what." She explains.
Silence fell between them after River's explanation as I kept Bananas calmed, soothing and patting his flank.
When Samira didn't look like she was going to back down soon, River sighs. "A body was found near the back roads that we take, Samira."
The air suddenly cleared up with this heavy feeling of static build-up. The strong scent of the earth slowly ebbed away and I watch Samira's body relax from behind.
She was soon turning away and heading back to me and the horse. "Call me later about the body." She reaches out and I gently took her hand, feeling her give mine a firm grip before I helped her back onto Bananas.
"Think you can shift and run back with us?" She asks. I nodded excitedly as it's been quite a while since I've been a wolf.
Moving behind the horse to strip off my clothes, handing them to Samira to hold, I felt my bones start to crack and rearrange themselves along with my organs. Gritting my teeth, I landed on all four paws and shook off the remaining transformation. I gave a happy yip to let my friend know I was done.
Giving a nod, Samira clicks her tongue and Bananas took off in a trot. I was about to follow after but stopped and looked back at River, wondering if I had screwed up with her.
The Alpha just looks at me before giving me a small smile. "I'll see you around when the full moon comes, Fenrir." She gives a small wave.
Relief flooding me, I took off after Samira and her horse, running alongside her.
It wasn't till we got back to the farm that when Samira hopped off Bananas and kneeled in front of me to rub between my ears that I notice she suddenly had a couple of white strands in her dark brown hair.
