Chapter 14
Roxy woke as Donovan put the Xterra in park and leaned forward in his seat. She removed the earbuds from her ears and looked around the whiteness that surrounded them. Every tree, bush, and the entire ground was blanketed in snow. She was surprised to see how much things had changed since she’d fallen asleep with her head propped on her jacket against the window.
She worked a crick from her neck as she asked, “Why did you stop?”
He pointed with his chin toward the road in front of them, and Roxy tried to focus her sleepy gaze on what lay ahead. A wooden bridge stood covered in snow like a sentinel guarding the narrow river below. The sky was overcast, and the inside of the bridge looked like a black hole that would suck them inside and never let them out again.
