THE GOLDEN CAGE

The first thing she felt was silk. Not hotel sheets. Not her own. Cold. Expensive. A pillow that didn’t smell like mildew. The second thing she felt was a wrist. Hers. Cuffed to something metal. A bedframe. Steel. The third thing she heard was a voice. Low. Italian. Accented. Not Luca’s. Not the wall of a man. This one didn’t need to shout. “You’re awake.” Eliana didn’t open her eyes. Not yet. Because she knew that voice from Vincenzo’s office. Knew it from the way every man in that room had stopped talking when it entered. Alessandro De Luca. He was here now. And she’d missed the whole ride. Her pulse jumped against the cuff. The drug was gone from her veins, but her limbs felt like water. She tried to sit. The chain pulled taut. Two inches. That was all she got. The room was quiet. Too quiet. No traffic. No cathedral bells. No Palermo. She opened her eyes. Ceiling first. White plaster. A chandelier. Not the kind that belongs in a €30 hotel. This one had crystal. Then the room. Large. Minimal. Black, gray, marble. No windows she could see. One door. Closed. No handle on this side. Then him. Alessandro sat in a chair three meters away. Like he’d been placed there for her to find. Black suit. No tie. Shirt open at the throat. Dark hair. Dark eyes. A face built to ruin negotiations. He wasn’t looking at the bruise on her wrist. He was looking at her. Like she was a problem he’d already solved. Luca stood by the door. Head down. The other two men were gone. “Water?” Alessandro asked. His voice was calm. That was worse than yelling. Eliana licked her lips. They were dry. “Where am I?” He didn’t answer. He lifted a glass from the side table himself. Filled it. Didn’t offer it to Luca. He stood. Luca didn’t move. Luca wouldn’t. Alessandro walked to the bed. Stopped just out of her kick range. Smart. He set the glass on the nightstand. Out of reach. Then he said it. *“You’re in my house now, Eliana. And you don’t leave until the debt is paid.”* --- The line landed like a lock clicking. Not _if_. _Until_. She stared at him. The €4 million. Vincenzo’s debt. The one she was supposed to be. “Let me go,” she said. Her voice didn’t shake. She wouldn’t give him that. “I don't owe you anything.” “You owed me a yes at 6 PM,” he said. No anger. Just facts. That changed the terms.” “I’d rather—” “You’d rather what?” He tilted his head. “Die in an alley? Be sold by Vincenzo to someone worse?” Luca shifted by the door. Alessandro didn’t look at him. Alessandro stepped closer. Half a meter. “I don’t traffic women, Eliana. I collect debts. You are the debt.” The cuff bit her skin. Silk sheets under her. Steel on her wrist. She realized three things at once: 1. The room had no windows. 2. Luca was afraid of him. 3. She was not getting out of this bed on her own. Alessandro saw her see it. A flicker. Almost a smile. Not kind. He picked up the glass again. Held it to her lips. “Drink,” he said. An order. Gentle like a blade in velvet. “You’ll need your strength.” She didn’t. She turned her head. The water spilled. Cold on the silk. On her cheek. Alessandro didn’t flinch. He just set the empty glass down. “Fine,” he said. He stood. “Luca. Leave us.” Luca hesitated. “Boss—” “Leave. Us.” The door opened. Closed. Clicked. Lock. Alessandro pulled the chair closer. The metal scraped the marble. He sat on the chair watching her comfortably like a predator watching a prey . Now there was nothing between them but air, a cuff, and €4 million. act.
