How dare they do this to me?
Not only did they take Ashley’s side when she convinced the whole pack I had committed treason for an action I had no control over, but they sent me away to the border camps for three years. The phantom licks of pain stung through my back at the thought of the whips snapping down on me.
A hand landed on my shoulder and on instinct I screamed and shoved it away.
“Elyse.” The familiar tone of my mate sent shivers down my spine. My body craved his touch by pure instinct but I forced the feeling down.
“Is there something you need, Alpha?” I asked, trying to keep the hope down in my stomach.
Was he upset at what my family had suggested? Was he trying to console me right now?
“He’ll always console us. He’s our mate.” My wolf assured me. I could feel her pride coursing through us at the thought that her mate left Ashley to be with us.
“Come here.” Alpha Grayson pulled me to his chest and I sighed in relief. I knew it. I knew my mate would be on my side. The tears stung and threatened to drop as I buried my face in his chest and took in his familiar scent. Alpha Grayson rubbed my back soothingly. “You have to understand Elyse. She’s the rightful Beta heir.” He said in a soft tone. My body froze in his hold. “She’s much stronger by nature-”
I pushed my body away from him in shock. “Are you siding with them? With her?” My voice became a growl at the end.
“It’s for the good of the pack, Elyse.” Alpha Grayson crossed his muscular arms.
“But we’re mates, Grayson. Doesn’t that mean anything to you?” I pleaded.
“You’re an Omega, Elyse. You come from unknown origins by a low-born family from outside of FrostMist Pack. And on top of that, by nature, you are physically weak, Elyse. How could I, as the Alpha of FrostMist, take such a wolf as my mate?”
“So you’d rather have someone with a title, rather than your Goddess given mate because of politics. How can your wolf allow this?” I tried to reason. Grayson stared at me but said nothing.
“You’re a coward.”
Grayson grabbed my shoulders and slammed me against the wall. I cried out in pain when he squeezed my neck in anger.
“Do not disrespect me, Omega. Remember your place. I could end your life right now and no one would miss you.” He squeezed tighter for emphasis.
“But if you do-” I rasped out, wheezing in just enough air to speak. “Then you would have no one to switch wolves with your precious chosen mate and to send to the North as a slaughter cow.”
Alpha Grayson snarled and shoved me back into the wall. I choked out a laugh. He wasn’t killing me nor was he refuting my argument. He knew I was right.
“A slaughter cow. Yes, I suppose that’s what you are. Not even a wolf, Elyse. An animal raised for meat. Your only purpose is your body. It’s remarkable you ever thought you were anything more than that.”
My wolf whimpered in my mind, heartbroken at her mate’s rejection. I simply felt numb. Or at least, I thought I did until he spoke his next words.
“I, Grayson Fields, Alpha of FrostMist Pack, hereby reject Elyse, an Omega of the FrostMist Pack as my mate and Luna.”
A hoarse scream tore from my throat. My body went limp from the scalding hot pain coursing through my body. I clawed at my heart that was bleeding, aching, punishing me for the rejection it felt from the one who was supposed to love it unconditionally.
I peeled my eyes open to see Grayson watching me with a smug expression. He watched me for a moment as I rolled on the floor in agony until he seemed to be satisfied and then stepped over my body to walk away.
I forced my shaking and bleeding hands to push myself off the floor and rose to my feet. I watched his back get further and further away from me with hazy vision. I pointed at his body and snarled an unfamiliar sound with everything I had left within me. Startled, Alpha Grayson looked back in shock.
“I do not know the day, nor the time or place, but one day- you will feel every single drop of blood, every ounce of pain, and every piece of terror I have had to endure from you. My name will be the last that will leave your lips before I take everything you love and hold dear away from you. This I swear to you, under the name of the Moon Goddess.”
And with that, my body collapsed on the floor. Almost immediately, two gamma guards came up to me and pinned my arms behind my back, shouting something in my ears.
“That should keep her wolf quiet.” I could feel something was injected into my neck. I wanted to protest but my body was burning in pain.
“I’m scared, Elyse. Don’t let them take me.” My wolf's frantic voice grew quieter and quieter and slowly, my vision went dark.
***
I had no idea how long I was in a restless sleep but at some point I felt my awareness start to come back. There were voices talking all around me as people touched and prodded my body in places I couldn’t see.
My vision was blurry but I managed to see I was sitting on a stainless steel examination table in the Pack Healers office, with a bright light hitting me directly in the eyes. My limbs were dead weight but even if I could manage the strength to move them, I was strapped down to the surgery table.
“Gina?” I whispered to my wolf in my mind. “Are you there?”
Total silence.
The emptiness inside me was like a gaping wound, terrible and daunting. Never in my life had I felt so alone before. Even as I was beaten in the border camp, despised by my family, unwanted by my mate, hated by my pack, I never felt completely alone because I always had my wolf- Gina. But now…
Tears rolled down my cheeks, seemingly the only part of my body I still remained in control of.
It must be true then. I must have already lost her…
“Goodbye Gina.” I solemnly spoke in my mind. “I’m so sorry I couldn’t protect you…”
A gentle stir moved in my mind. So soft, barely a whisper, and fading fast. “It’s not your fault, Elyse.”
I gasped as much as I could with my slack jaw. My lips trembled in relief. “I thought you were gone.” I cried out internally.
“Not yet… but they will be swapping us soon. I can feel them… pulling me away.” For a moment, her presence disappeared entirely but after a minute or so, her feather soft lightness eased into my mind once more.
“I’m going to fix this, Gina. I’m going to set everything right.”
“They think they can separate us… but this won’t… be the end.” She struggled to speak, almost as if she were falling asleep as well. “We… will meet again… one day…”
And like the soft fading of the wind, her soul left my presence. Tears streamed down the sides of my cheeks and pooled beneath my neck as I sobbed.
“Gina…” I managed to audibly weep. “I won’t give up on us, Gina! I’ll find you, and they’ll never be able to take you away from me again!” I shouted in my brain, not knowing if Gina could even hear me anymore.
“Is she waking up?” A familiar gruff voice sounded to my right. “Give her more of that sedative.”
Another surge of burning pain traveled through my neck, snuffing out the little fight I had gathered in that short amount of time, until I sat there completely limp once more, and fading fast.
“Now make this quick, I don’t want any more room for mistakes.” The familiar voice spoke again- the man who used to be my father. “Let’s get started.”
And with that last sentence echoing through my brain, my world faded to black.
