When I woke the next morning, I headed to my first lecture at the Academy: Introduction to the Magic of the Four Elements.
I was among the first to arrive. At first glance, it was an ordinary amphitheater-style classroom — just like the ones in my own world. Most of the space was occupied by rows of seats facing a raised stage with a lectern set at the center.
I chose the front row, fully aware that I would be distracted less there. I needed to absorb as much information as possible. And after yesterday’s initiation, I had no doubt I would become the next “victim” of Eleanor’s followers.
Settling into my seat, I reached out to Aria in my mind.
“Why are there no Air House students at the Academy?”
“I don’t know. It’s strange. And the emblem had only three dragons. You need to find out what’s happened over the last hundred years as soon as possible..”
Crumpled paper balls suddenly began hitting me.
“Hey, pathetic girl, you should’ve taken a few days off. You still stink! Aren’t you afraid the professor will pass out spending an hour and a half next to you?”
I turned away, ignoring them. Paper kept flying at me from all sides. Some had words scrawled across them: Stinker, Pathetic, Half-wit, and so on.
Finally, the professor entered, and the first-years quieted down a little.
“Good morning, and welcome to the Academy of the Elements. Congratulations on beginning your studies. I hope you’ll make good use of the time spent in my lectures. My name is Professor Willard, and I teach the Fundamentals of Elemental Magic. I want you to understand that without theoretical knowledge, you will not be able to begin practical training.
“My course is divided into two halves. In two months, you will have your exam. If you pass, you may continue to the next part. If you fail, you’ll retake it as many times as necessary. Many before you didn’t take my warning seriously, and only a handful passed on their first attempt.
“I hope I’ve made myself clear. Well then, let us begin.
The Fundamentals of Elemental Magic.
In nature, we distinguish four primary elements — four main forces: fire, water, air, and earth. There is also mention of a fifth element, the quintessence of the four: the element of spirit, also known as ether.
Magicians divide our world into three planes: the physical plane, the astral plane, and the mental plane.
The mental plane is the realm of thought. The astral plane is the realm of energies and emotions. The physical plane is the world of the elements, of physical things we can see and touch.
A magician's growth must be gradual — starting with the physical and ascending toward the mental. Very few ever reach the mental plane, where magic can be shaped solely through thought.
The ancient magicians used the elements to describe various objects and phenomena.
All four elements are present in every person — though in different proportions. It is the combination of these inner elements that allows us to practice magic.
To become a magician, one must possess four qualities: intellect, courage, will, and humility. To know, to dare, to want, and to remain silent.
Every magician is guided by a dominant element, which depends on individual abilities. But here lies a paradox: without uniting the elements within oneself, no true result can be achieved. Only together do they hold power.
The elements have far subtler and deeper qualities than we often realize. For example, when magicians speak of the Element of Fire, they do not literally mean burning flames. When they speak of Water, they do not mean a physical liquid.
Remember: the elements are, first and foremost, archetypes — sets of qualities and attributes. If a person is associated with the element of Fire, it does not mean they are physically burning. It describes their nature — often someone energetic or quick-tempered. The element of Water may describe someone who is skilled at controlling their emotions.”
Now, let us examine the attributes of each element more closely, and based on these attributes, determine for which purposes each is used in magic.
Fire is the most active element. It ignites quickly but fades just as fast. Fire is energy, and so in magic it is often used for protection, offense, or restoring strength. Fire helps you pursue the goals you burn for. Warriors, athletes, and highly energetic people often fall under Fire.
Water governs everything emotional and hidden in the depths. It is used in love magic, in matters of the heart, and in anything concealed. Water governs extrasensory perception — if you need to uncover something hidden, use Water. Its key attribute is purification. For healing or protection against curses, Water is your ally.
Earth grounds and strengthens. It is often used in money magic, where proper grounding is essential. If you wish to improve your financial situation, turn to Earth. It also fortifies health. Air may heal illnesses and eliminate consequences, but Earth prevents ailments altogether. Earth protects and empowers. If you can build a mountain before you, nothing can harm you.
Air governs communication and intellect. It strengthens connections, improves communication and relationships, and enhances learning. Air can also heal — because healing requires knowledge.”
