Nine Saturday Morning Smoke and ash still permeated the air around her when Scarlet woke from a dark, dreamless sleep. Her thick lashes fluttered open as her lids parted to take in an insanely bright room. For a fleeting moment, she wondered if she had forgotten to draw her blinds before falling asleep last night. Turning her head away from the unforgiving sunlight, she closed her tired eyes for a few more minutes of rest, moaning into her fluffy pillow against the sharp headache quickly blossoming behind swollen eyes. The smell of sterile cotton sheets shook her back into her horrid reality. Flashes of last night’s fiery scene branded behind closed lids.
