Chapter Eleven

Aria's POV I exhaled softly, blinking afterwards. Eyes settling over the ceiling of my room and then I sighed. I looked around but there was no one, just the items placed in the same way I left it. I turned on the bed, my head aching in a way that had nothing to do with how long I had been on the bed. I sighed. And laid still, staring at the ceiling as I did a quiet accounting of what I remembered. The garden. The table. Those other women and Lila's mouth around the event that befell on my parents. Tea cups exploding and the rose petals falling to the ground. The image of Lila strangling herself came afterwards. What did I do? I briefly closed my eyes again and when I opened them she was there. Seated on my dressing table, not perched on the edge of it, just fully seated on its surface with the casual ownership of someone who had been there long enough to get comfortable. Her familiar black hair hung loosely around her shoulders and her green eyes were already in me when I found them. There was no denying she was the same woman from the ball and there was no denying she wasn't real. Except now. She was in the quieter space of my closed room. I brought my hand to my side and pushed myself up slowly. “You again," I said. She inclined her head. Not an apology , just an acknowledgement. "Are you real,” I said and it came out flat "how did you get here, aren't they guards outside?” " Oh trust me there are” she formed a smile "more than the guards you keep for a prison cell" she climbed down from the dressing mirror “and as for being real. That depends on what you mean by real" I closed my eyes "No… don't do that” my fingers pressed against my temple. "Don't answer a question with a question. I have had an extraordinary unpleasant afternoon and I'd like to know if this isn't just one of Lila's props" " You mean the brunette cunt?” The corner of her mouth moved as she scoffed slightly. “what I am is complicated… "Well break it down for me" I resorted. “you have to learn how to take deep breaths… "You disappeared," I cut in “at the ball. One of the guests thought I was crazy when I couldn't explain that there really was someone I was talking to and now half the pack thinks I am losing my mind." “Or maybe you ‘are’ losing your mind” she shrugged. “Excuse me?" “You think the pack thinks you're normal with or without me? You survived in a pack where the whole of it was wiped out…” “And I'm supposed to listen to what? A ghost?" I crossed my arms. "Well this ghost knows what ever happened to you at the garden” I opened my mouth but then closed it, rolling my eyes with a small sigh. I had almost killed Lila, almost made sure she wasn't going to be able to say anything, just because I was angry. I brought my hands to my temple and squeezed the bridge of my nose. “Okay, if you don't work for Lila then who sent you? Elias? What do you all mean by what I am?” If there wasn't something truly wrong with me then these powers I manifest shouldn't be normal. Like I was a werewolf and something else, something like a witch. " You are what you think you are" Like she read my mind. I opened my mouth but the door opened as well and my head snapped towards it immediately. A man stepped into my chambers with the unbothered ease of someone who had been invited. He scanned the room before his gaze landed on me and I glanced at the dressing table again but there wasn't anyone there. White haired that fell across his forehead, calm blue eyes and a lean but built statue. His young features stood out, the kind of young that made you suspect he wasn't. He didn't smile but I could tell he had a bright aura. I could feel it. He dragged his eyes away from me after lingering for too long, assessing my room once again with a mild professional expression, his plain robe dragging along the flooring. “I assume the lady Aria would be an old feeble woman, considering the fact that there was a lady poised as the Alpha's Luna already” his deep smooth voice filled the room as he came closer, arms behind his back. He was talking about Lila. I swallowed at the charm of his voice. “Sorry to diminish your expectations" "Oh no darling, you've quite exceeded it” casting me a glare that could make me piss in my dress, before moving towards the dressing table like he could sense something there. “Is the Alpha's betrothed alright?"I couldn't help but ask. " She won't speak and sustained a few bruise marks on her neck. Besides that, she will be fine.” I exhaled sharply, almost relieved that nothing serious had happened, I imagined what Elias's reaction could be. “And my mate?" I calmly asked “Your mate believes you're a hybrid," he said curtly. I arched my brow, letting the word sink in “Hybrid?" “Half werewolf, half something else." He said lazily while he leaned on the dressing table with arms crossed. " I know what..” my voice croaked "I know what hybrid means, it's just…" my blood ran cold. "Not possible?” He paused "it's been a thousand years since a hybrid so yes, it's not possible but this morning, roses came off their vines and three women are apparently telling four different versions of what happened, to anyone who will listen." Great. I died and I came back to earth to become something that had never existed, not since a thousand years. "Who are you then?" I asked, eyes locked on him to watch his expression shift if he tried to lie but then he never broke eye contact as he replied. "I am Calix Evergreen” straightening up "warlock Lord of the witches council"
