The old Blackwood estate stood on the edge of the city.
It had been abandoned for years.
Emily could see why.
The mansion was enormous, but darkness covered most of the windows.
Vines climbed the walls.
The garden had become overgrown.
Alexander stood at the entrance.
“Nobody comes here.”
Victoria looked around.
“Someone did.”
The front door was unlocked.
Daniel’s security team entered first.
Then Alexander.
Emily followed closely.
Inside, dust covered everything.
Portraits of the Blackwood family lined the walls.
Emily stopped in front of one.
Alexander’s grandfather stared back at her.
He looked powerful.
Cold.
Untouchable.
Then Emily noticed something strange.
The portrait had been moved.
She touched the wall behind it.
A hidden panel opened.
Victoria gasped.
“That’s it.”
Emily looked at her.
“What?”
“Our mother’s symbol.”
Carved into the wall was a small silver star.
Their mother used it to mark her personal files.
Victoria pressed the symbol.
The wall opened.
Inside was a small room.
There were dozens of boxes.
Documents.
Photographs.
Computer drives.
And one old video recorder.
Emily’s hands trembled.
“Our mother.”
Victoria nodded.
They carried the recorder into the main room.
Alexander connected it to the television.
A woman appeared on screen.
Emily stopped breathing.
Her mother.
She hadn’t seen her face in years.
“Emily. Victoria.”
The twins sat down.
Their mother’s voice trembled.
“If you’re watching this, then something has happened to me.”
Emily began crying.
Their mother continued.
“I need you to understand something. Your father is not the man you believe him to be.”
Richard’s betrayal suddenly felt even deeper.
Victoria covered her mouth.
Their mother looked directly into the camera.
“I created the Blackwood predictive algorithm.”
Alexander leaned forward.
“It was designed to identify financial crimes before they happened.”
She paused.
“Edward Sterling wanted to use it for something else.”
Alexander’s expression darkened.
“He wanted to control markets.”
Their mother nodded.
“He wanted to manipulate companies, destroy competitors, and create artificial financial crises.”
Emily stared at the screen.
“Why didn’t you expose him?”
“I tried.”
Their mother looked frightened.
“Edward discovered what I was doing.”
She took a breath.
“He threatened my children.”
Emily’s tears fell.
“I made a deal with him.”
Victoria whispered:
“What deal?”
Their mother continued.
“I agreed to disappear.”
The screen went black.
Emily froze.
“What?”
The video restarted.
Their mother appeared again.
“I didn’t die.”
The twins stared.
Alexander stood.
“She’s alive.”
Emily couldn’t breathe.
Their mother continued:
“I disappeared to protect you.”
Victoria began crying.
“But if Edward is still alive, then he has broken our agreement.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then a slow clap echoed through the room.
Emily turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older.
Silver-haired.
Calm.
Elegant.
Alexander’s face went pale.
“Edward Sterling.”
The man smiled.
“Alexander.”
Victoria stepped backward.
“You.”
Edward looked at the twins.
“Your mother was very clever.”
Emily’s voice shook.
“Where is she?”
Edward smiled.
“Alive.”
Emily’s heart stopped.
“Where?”
“Safe.”
“Tell me where she is.”
Edward ignored her.
He looked at Alexander.
“Your grandfather built an empire.”
Alexander’s voice was cold.
“You destroyed it.”
“No.”
Edward smiled.
“I perfected it.”
“You killed people.”
“I removed obstacles.”
Emily stepped forward.
“Did you kill Victoria?”
Edward looked at her.
“No.”
Emily froze.
“Then who did?”
Edward smiled.
“The wrong person.”
Before anyone could react, the lights went out.
A loud explosion shook the building.
Emily screamed.
Alexander grabbed her.
The floor beneath them collapsed.
Emily fell.
“Alexander!”
His hand caught hers.
He held her tightly.
“Don’t let go!”
She looked down.
Blackness waited beneath her.
“I’m slipping!”
“Never.”
His voice broke.
“Never let go of me.”
Then another hand reached down.
Victoria.
“Take my hand!”
Emily reached up.
The three women and Alexander struggled together.
But the floor continued collapsing.
Edward was gone.
And somewhere beneath the estate, something exploded.
