The Bride’s Room

1009 Words
The Blackwood mansion felt different when they returned. Emily could feel it. The silence. The tension. The sense that someone was watching. Alexander noticed too. “Stay close.” Emily nodded. They went upstairs. Victoria followed. The bride’s room was still exactly as it had been on the wedding day. The wedding dress remained hanging by the window. Emily stared at it. She had walked into this room pretending to be Victoria. Now she stood there knowing that her sister had been alive when the deception began. Victoria approached the mirror. “Our mother used to hide things behind mirrors.” Emily turned. “What?” “She thought nobody would look there.” Victoria removed the mirror. Behind it was a small metal box. The silver key fit perfectly. The box opened. Inside was a USB drive. And a letter. Emily unfolded it. Her mother’s handwriting appeared. My precious girls, Emily’s eyes blurred. If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from the truth. Victoria began crying. I had to disappear because Edward Sterling threatened your lives. I believed distance would keep you safe. I was wrong. Emily continued reading. The Blackwood algorithm is not merely a financial system. It contains evidence of every illegal transaction Edward has made. Every payment. Every name. Every murder. Alexander’s expression hardened. But there is something else. Emily turned the page. Edward did not act alone. She stopped. Victoria looked at her. “Keep reading.” Emily continued. Someone inside my own family helped him. Silence. Richard Carter gave Edward access to my research. Emily closed her eyes. Her father. Again. But the letter continued. Your father believed he was protecting you. He was wrong, but he was not the mastermind. Emily exhaled. The mastermind is someone who has been close to the Blackwood family for decades. Alexander looked at her. “Edward.” Emily nodded. But then she saw the final sentence. If Edward is still alive, do not trust anyone who claims to be protecting Alexander. Emily’s blood ran cold. “Daniel.” Alexander turned. At that exact moment, the mansion doors slammed shut downstairs. A voice echoed through the house. “Very good.” Emily froze. Daniel appeared at the top of the stairs. He was holding a gun. Victoria stepped backward. Alexander moved in front of Emily. “Daniel.” Daniel smiled sadly. “I’m sorry.” Emily stared at him. “You lied to us.” “I had no choice.” “You always have a choice.” Daniel looked at Alexander. “I tried to protect you.” “By helping them?” “I did what I had to do.” Alexander’s voice became cold. “Put the gun down.” Daniel laughed. “You still don’t understand.” “What?” “Edward isn’t the real threat.” Emily’s heart raced. “Then who is?” Daniel looked directly at Alexander. “Your grandfather.” Alexander’s face changed. “He’s dead.” Daniel smiled. “Is he?” A door opened behind them. An elderly man stepped into the hallway. Emily stared. Alexander stopped breathing. Victoria whispered: “That’s impossible.” The man looked exactly like the portrait in the old estate. Alexander’s grandfather. The man who was supposed to have been dead for years. He smiled. “Hello, Alexander.” Alexander’s face turned pale. “You…” The old man slowly walked forward. “Did you really believe I was dead?” Emily grabbed Alexander’s hand. His fingers were cold. The old man looked at her. “And you must be Emily.” Emily froze. He knew her name. He smiled. “The wrong bride.” Alexander stepped forward. “What do you want?” “Everything.” “Why?” “Because you were never meant to inherit my company.” Alexander’s expression hardened. “The marriage contract.” “Was a trap.” Emily’s heart stopped. “What?” The old man laughed. “Victoria was supposed to marry you.” He looked at Emily. “But she died.” He smiled. “And then you arrived.” Emily realized the truth. The contract had never been about Alexander finding a wife. Someone had wanted a Carter daughter inside the Blackwood mansion. Someone had wanted access to her. And now they had it. The old man raised his hand. Daniel aimed his gun. “Give me the drive.” Emily held it tightly. “No.” The old man’s smile disappeared. “Then Alexander dies.” Emily stepped forward. “Take me instead.” Alexander turned. “Emily, no.” She looked at him. “I won’t let you die because of me.” The old man smiled. “That’s exactly what I was hoping you’d say.” Suddenly, a gunshot rang through the mansion. Daniel dropped his weapon. Everyone froze. A woman stood at the bottom of the stairs. Eleanor. She was holding a gun. And beside her stood Charlotte, weak but alive. Eleanor looked at the old man. “You’re under arrest.” The old man laughed. “You think this is over?” Then every television in the mansion turned on. A countdown appeared. 00:10 Emily stared. “What’s happening?” Alexander’s face changed. “Someone is going to release the files.” 00:09 Victoria looked at him. “Who?” 00:08 Alexander shook his head. “I don’t know.” 00:07 Emily looked at the USB drive. Then at her mother’s letter. Then at the old man. 00:06 The old man smiled. “Too late.” 00:05 Daniel suddenly whispered: “Edward.” 00:04 The screens flickered. 00:03 Alexander grabbed Emily’s hand. 00:02 A voice filled the mansion. Their mother’s voice. “Hello, my daughters.” Emily’s heart stopped. 00:01 The screen went black. Then the words appeared: THE TRUTH ABOUT THE BLACKWOOD FAMILY WILL BE REVEALED TOMORROW. Emily stared at Alexander. The old man smiled. And somewhere in the city, Edward Sterling watched the countdown reach zero. The war had finally begun.
