Rayne, Gene, and Benton slowly made their way through the field next to the middle and high schools. They were running a little behind for ritual and did not want to get caught in the wicked storm which was forming. That night they had sensed some strange energy surges, and things just felt off. So, they had chosen to gather at Rayne’s house to discuss the disturbances. They had all just arrived when sirens filled the air. What they had heard earlier was indeed a gunshot, and someone in their quiet little community had been shot. This was going to make a mess for sure.
Rayne turned on the scanner and they were appalled to hear that all the excitement was going down in the woods and area around the public park They had heard a loud bang and now it was appearing to be something serious.
Rayne turned to the other, “What do you think that powerful energy we felt was? Do you think the two are related?”
“Probably, we will have to investigate once the cops leave the area.”
“I agree.”
The three nodded. It was settled, once they had worked the crime scene the three of them would return to the park to look for clues that would lead them to the culprits. As far as they knew, Dayton did not have a Warden, and as such, they worked to keep the area safe.
Abigail was no ordinary Warden, and this was why she kept a low profile letting the Yost coven do most of her work while she studies and prepared. The prophecy foretold she would face a great evil unlike any other. She had to be ready. Now that they were in the Fey land, things were going to get even crazier for them. Casimir looked around now that he was calm. He could feel the relaxing vibes of Solaris Castle, and he walked behind the others, taking in the sights and sounds.
King Oberon made his presence known about that time. He walked out of the shadows themselves. Casimir was startled and put his hands up blasting the kind across the courtyard they were in and drawing a dozen guards to them all at once. Yelling and screaming all about. Abigail rolled her eyes.
“Great going, you just blasted the Kind of the Fae.”
“What!? I was startled, I was not expecting him to just appear!”
Oberon was laughing as he dusted himself off. He walked towards them, his hair a mess and dirt and mud and his clothes and face. Many were shocked by how dishevelled he looked. It was uncommon for the king to ever have a hair out of place.
“Well, that is quite a punch you pack their young human, what is your name?”
“Casimir your Majesty.”
Casimir spoke with respect, and then he noticed everyone else had fallen to one knee except the guards who still had spears drawn and were ready to smith him.
Meanwhile Back on Earth…
Rayne and the others went to Benton’s house. Benton’s parents were both teachers, so many times they were up late grading papers and talking to parents on the phone. This night was no different, and the three often took advantage of the low supervision to hone their craft as witches.
“Hear us now oh sacred flame reveals to us this evil's name. By this crystal and by these roots.”
Rayne and the other chanted their spell, and suddenly their magic worked, but it did not just work a little it worked a lot. A fireball formed off the candle and hovered towards the door. When it arrived, it burnt a hole right through the door and proceeded into the hallway and down the steps. Benton yelled.
“We have to get ahead of it, so it does not burn anything else!”
It was true, Rayne and Gene were fat. Benton was not and in an act of heroism leaped over the other two, rolled forward, and opened the door just in time for the fireball to go through it.
“Come on you two, we need to follow that fireball!”
Dayton is not a large town. There is not a place inside the main city limits you cannot walk to within a half-hour at most. So, they headed into the night and began following this fireball. Now it was not uncommon to see kids or teens out past dark. Dayton was safe, and everyone knew everyone. What was odd was three kids following a ball of fire. Still, if they had been seen no one confronted them.
The path crossed the bridge at Flour Mill Park and headed down Cottonwood Street towards the track and field. It was as if the ball of fire knew the park was closed off and did not go through it on purpose. They had not yet noticed this feature, but it would play a key role in their magic later. As they followed the fireball, they could see lights in the park need the old witch’s tree. They wanted so bad to know what was going on that they almost went over there to investigate from the shadows, but they knew that was a bad idea.
The fireball turned at Cameron Court and slammed right into the side of Rock Hill. The three paused as they looked at the massive rock before them. What were they going to do? How was a rock going to be their enemy, and then as if to answer their question, some of the Dark Lord’s minions stepped from the shadows? They were scarecrows with red glowing eyes.
“f**k NO!”
The three took off running towards the bridge on the other side of the track from the one they came on. It cut into the park with all the police and to safety. Safety from what? Were these people dressed in Scarecrow costumes messing with anyone who got too close? Were these some spiritual entities that were after them, after all that fireball led them to that hill there had to be a reason?
They made it to the park where an officer stepped forward to stop them, but then he saw the looks on their faces and how out of breath they were and decided to question them. Unable to speak coherently, it was then the four officers present who heard a sinister giggle in the darkness. One which was not a man, but not a woman's, it was someplace between, and it was scary. Rayne, Benton, and Gene backed up together with their backs facing each other. They were not turning their backs on this crazy.
Suddenly one police officer dropped to the ground and was pulled into the darkness. Screaming and the sound of rending flesh and crunching bones could be heard. Now the other police were radioing for backup and looking in all directions. Rayne, Gene, and Benton all shivered in fear as one by one the last two officers were taken similarly to the first. They drew a circle in the dirt and joined hands. In unison, they chanted.
“Evil cannot touch us; the Goddess will protect us.”
As they began to chant an orb of radiant energy formed around them. This had not happened before when they cast. Never had their magic manifested so physically. It did not matter though, they needed to keep going. A scarecrow leaped from the shadows and hitting the barrier vanished into smoke and flame screaming. Suddenly the barrier erupted in a shockwave taking out the rest and leaving the three teens winded but able to escape. They quickly fled to Rayne’s house which was just up the road.
Upon arriving home, they found a familiar sight for Rayne’s house. Her mom was passed out drunk on the couch and her dad was passed out drunk in the bed. It was a sad sight, but what could one do. Life was hard sometimes, and Rayne made the most of what life gave her. They sat down shaking. It was Gene that spoke first.
“We cannot tell anyone what we just saw. They will think we are crazy, and that we know something, and they will put us away.”
Meanwhile at the Park…
The police arrived at a gruesome scene at the scene of the prior murder. Four officers looked as if they had been jumbled into a ball by something huge and powerful. Seven piles of burnt straw sat in a circle around a crucial point which no one could explain. There was a circle drawn at that point with a few magic symbols in it. The police in Dayton could not understand what they were looking at. Only that it was Occultly related.
