CHAPTER3

Jariel and Amrey sat side by side in the Control Room (CCR), carefully cutting out stencils for the water ballast tank. The hum of the ship's machinery provided a steady background noise, punctuated occasionally by the crackle of the intercom. "You know," Amrey said, breaking the comfortable silence, "I learned a lot about the navigation systems today. It's fascinating how everything is interconnected." Jariel nodded, her eyes focused on the stencil she was cutting. "Yeah, I was on deck duty earlier, and I got to see how they handle the mooring lines. It's a lot more complicated than it looks." Amrey chuckled. "Tell me about it. I almost got tangled up in one of those ropes the first time I tried." Jariel smiled, but her mind was already wandering. She loved these moments of camaraderie with Amrey, but there was always a part of her that was eager to learn more, to prove herself. Suddenly, the public address system crackled to life, and the voice of the ship's communication officer filled the room. "Cadet Jariel, report to the bridge at once. The captain is looking for you." Jariel's heart skipped a beat. She exchanged a quick glance with Amrey, who looked equally surprised. "What do you think that's about?" Amrey asked, concern etched on her face. "I have no idea," Jariel replied, her mind racing. Fear and curiosity swirled within her. Had she done something wrong? Or was there something important she needed to know? "Better not keep the captain waiting," Amrey said, giving her a reassuring pat on the shoulder. Jariel nodded, taking a deep breath to steady herself. She quickly put down the stencil and stood up, her legs feeling slightly shaky. As she made her way to the bridge, her thoughts were a whirlwind of possibilities, each one more daunting than the last. When she finally reached the bridge, she paused for a moment outside the door, gathering her courage before stepping inside. She had no idea what awaited her, but she knew one thing for certain: she would face it head-on, just like she had faced every challenge so far. Captain Cobham stood tall, his piercing gaze fixed on Jariel. "Jariel," he began, his voice firm and commanding, "I expect my crew to be focused and diligent in their duties." Jariel tried to listen, but her mind wandered. She couldn't help but notice his chiseled features and the way his uniform clung to his muscular frame. Her thoughts drifted to fantasies of being close to him, feeling his strength and presence. "Jariel!" Captain Cobham's voice boomed, snapping her back to reality. She blinked, realizing she had been caught daydreaming. "As punishment for your lack of attention, you will clean the bulkheads from the bridge wing down to the upper deck. Do I make myself clear?" "Yes, Captain," she stammered, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. She quickly averted her gaze, trying to focus on the task ahead rather than the magnetic pull of his presence.
