The alliance that developed between Valery Agapov and Page Boucher proved to be of significant value. At first, it was more fruitful for the French than for the Russians, but that was not the way it was presented to Valery’s superiors. He boldly told how Page opened the way forward for Russian influence in countries where their name and philosophy had not featured well. These previous countries, who would have turned their backs on any Russian advances, now had a door slightly open for them, courtesy of the French who had a foot firmly planted inside.
The countries he named were Israel, Lebanon, the Hatay Province of Turkey and Egypt, together with a place Valery’s superior showed additional interest in: the two Sovereign Base Areas under British control on the island of Cyprus.
