Grimes unlocked the cell door, but before she could even finish opening it, the squeaking of the bars made the woman jump out of the bed. I grabbed Grimes’s collar, yanking her back and slamming the cell door. The woman grabbed the bars just seconds after I slammed it shut. Grimes was breathing hard, clutching her chest. “Are you alright?” I asked her, grabbing her shoulders to make her face me. “I’m so sorry. I should have been the one to take that risk.” Grimes nodded her head, looking more scared than hurt. “No, Alpha, it’s okay. I’m fine.
