By seven o'clock that evening, the Grand Imperial Hotel glittered beneath thousands of crystal lights.
Politicians, celebrities, business leaders, and members of Moscow's elite gathered for the annual Children's Hope Charity Gala.
It was one of the most anticipated events of the year.
And one of the few occasions where the Moretti family and the Volkov name appeared together in public.
Aria stepped from the limousine wearing a floor-length emerald gown. Diamonds shimmered at her ears, and her hair was swept into an elegant chignon.
Photographers called her name.
"Mrs. Volkov!"
"Over here!"
She smiled for every camera.
Beside her, Nikolai rested a possessive hand against the small of her back.
To the world, they were the picture of elegance.
Inside, Aria felt as though she couldn't breathe.
---
The ballroom sparkled with crystal chandeliers and live orchestral music.
Alessandro and Isabella Moretti greeted guests while Matteo mingled with investors.
Aria exchanged polite conversation, never straying far from Nikolai.
She knew he was watching.
He always was.
Across the room, Lior Voss entered.
Dressed in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, he carried himself with quiet confidence. Several guests greeted him, but his attention drifted almost immediately to Aria.
He noticed how often Nikolai touched her shoulder, her waist, her hand.
Not affection.
Possession.
Their eyes met across the ballroom.
For just a second, Aria's guarded expression softened.
Then Nikolai stepped between them.
"Lior."
"Nikolai."
The two men shook hands once more.
"You've become quite popular in Moscow," Nikolai said evenly.
"I've been welcomed warmly."
"I'm sure."
There was no warmth in Nikolai's smile.
Only warning.
---
Later in the evening, the orchestra began a slow waltz.
Couples filled the polished dance floor.
Nikolai extended his hand toward Aria.
"Dance with me."
She placed her hand in his without hesitation.
The orchestra swelled as they moved gracefully among the other couples.
To everyone watching, they looked perfectly in love.
Nikolai leaned close enough that only she could hear him.
"You've been thinking about him."
"No."
"You hesitate before every answer."
"I'm tired."
His grip tightened slightly.
"You are mine."
Her heartbeat quickened.
"I know."
"Don't make me remind you."
She swallowed hard.
"I won't."
The music ended.
Applause echoed through the ballroom.
As soon as they stepped away from the dance floor, another voice interrupted.
"May I borrow the lady for the next dance?"
Lior.
The room seemed to fall silent.
Every nearby guest watched the three of them.
Nikolai looked at Aria.
The choice appeared to be hers.
But they both knew it wasn't.
Aria forced a polite smile.
"I'm sorry, Lior."
"I promised this dance to my husband."
For the first time that evening, disappointment flickered across Lior's face.
"I understand."
He stepped back without another word.
Nikolai smiled.
A small victory.
---
Hours later, the gala came to an end.
Guests began leaving the hotel one by one.
As Aria walked toward the entrance alone for a brief moment, she heard hurried footsteps behind her.
"Aria."
She turned.
Lior stopped a respectful distance away.
"I won't keep you."
She glanced toward the waiting limousines.
"We shouldn't be alone."
"I know."
He hesitated.
Then quietly asked,
"If you ever needed somewhere safe..."
She looked at him, startled.
"...would you tell me?"
Her lips parted, but no words came.
For several long seconds, she simply stared at him.
Then she whispered,
"I don't know."
It wasn't the answer he wanted.
But it was the first honest one she had given him.
Behind them, a black limousine door opened.
Nikolai stood beside it.
Watching.
His expression remained calm.
His eyes did not.
Without another word, Aria turned and walked toward her husband.
Lior remained where he was, a growing certainty settling in his chest.
Aria wasn't trapped by circumstance.
She was trapped by fear.
And fear was the strongest prison of all.
