Three days later, Moscow's elite gathered once again. This time, the event was a private charity auction held inside the historic Orlov Palace. Crystal chandeliers reflected against polished marble floors while a string quartet played softly in the background. Aria arrived on Nikolai's arm, dressed in a midnight-blue velvet gown. The diamond necklace he had given her rested against her collarbone like a reminder she could never take off. "Smile," Nikolai murmured. She did. Cameras flashed. Across the room, Lior Voss watched from a distance. She looked breathtaking. But he noticed something no one else did. When Nikolai placed his hand on her back, Aria's shoulders stiffened for the briefest second. It was almost invisible. Almost. --- The auction began. Rare paintings. Vintage jewelry. Historic manuscripts. Each item drew enthusiastic bids from the wealthy guests. When a children's hospital renovation project was introduced, Aria quietly raised her paddle. "Five million." Several heads turned. Another bidder answered. "Six million." Lior smiled faintly and lifted his own paddle. "Ten million." The room broke into applause. The auctioneer beamed. "Sold to Mr. Lior Voss!" Afterward, guests congratulated him on his generosity. Lior simply replied, "Every child deserves a chance." Aria watched him from across the room. The kindness in his voice stirred something inside her. Something she had tried very hard to bury. --- Later that evening, guests wandered through the palace gardens. Snow rested gently on the hedges, and lanterns cast a warm glow along the stone paths. Aria slipped outside, hoping for a few minutes alone. She wrapped her coat tighter around herself. "It's beautiful, isn't it?" She turned. Lior stood several steps away, hands tucked into the pockets of his overcoat. "It is." He kept a respectful distance. "I won't stay long." She gave him a grateful smile. "Thank you." "For what?" "For understanding." They stood in comfortable silence, listening to the fountain beneath its thin layer of ice. Finally, Lior spoke. "When we were children, you used to tell me you wanted a house by the sea." She laughed softly. "I can't believe you remember that." "I remember you said the windows had to be big enough to watch every sunrise." She looked toward the snowy garden. "I had forgotten." "No." He smiled gently. "I think you convinced yourself to forget." For a moment, Aria closed her eyes. She could almost picture that dream. A quiet home. Peace. Freedom. No fear. The sound of footsteps shattered the moment. A security guard approached. "Mrs. Volkov." She immediately stepped back. "Mr. Volkov is looking for you." "I'll be there." The guard nodded and left. Lior watched the color drain from her face. "You don't have to be afraid of me," he said quietly. She looked at him, sadness filling her eyes. "I'm not." "Then what are you afraid of?" Her lips trembled. Before she could answer, her phone vibrated. One message. Where are you? — Nikolai She locked the screen immediately. "I have to go." As she hurried back toward the palace, Lior remained in the garden. He noticed something lying on the bench where she had been sitting. A silk handkerchief. He picked it up. Embroidered neatly into one corner were the initials: A.M.V. Aria Moretti Volkov. He folded it carefully and slipped it into his coat pocket. "I'll return this to you," he whispered. Unaware that from an upstairs window, Nikolai had been watching the entire encounter. He couldn't hear their conversation. But he had seen enough. His expression remained calm. Yet his grip tightened around the crystal glass in his hand until it cracked. A single drop of blood ran across his palm. He didn't even notice. His eyes never left the snowy garden. Never left the place where his wife had stood with another man. The first seed of suspicion had become something far more dangerous.
