A Glimpse in the Rain

A Glimpse in the Rain The sky was crying again. Alina walked through the campus courtyard with her umbrella tilted slightly, just enough to let the rain kiss her skin. It matched the ache in her chest — a gentle, persistent reminder of the boy she watched but could never reach. She was halfway to the literature building when she saw him. Adrian. Leaning against his matte-black Audi, soaked from head to toe, hair plastered to his forehead, expression unreadable. She slowed. Something was wrong. There was no usual crowd, no girls clinging to his every word, no arrogant smile that made hearts race. Just him. Alone. Drenched and... broken? She hesitated. Her feet moved before her mind could stop them. “Adrian?” she said, voice trembling. He blinked, turning toward her. For a moment, his eyes softened. Then, recognition — faint, confused. “Alina, right?” he said, squinting through the rain. She nodded. Her grip tightened on the umbrella handle. “You’re soaked. Do you—do you want this?” She held out her umbrella like a peace offering. He looked at it. Then at her. A small laugh escaped his lips, low and hollow. “You’re kind,” he said. “More than I deserve today.” Alina didn’t know what to say. She wasn’t prepared for this — for him actually seeing her. “I’ll be fine,” he added, pushing off the car. “Just needed to clear my head.” She watched him walk past her, hands in his pockets, raindrops sliding down his neck. “Adrian,” she called out suddenly, surprising even herself. He stopped. She didn’t know what she meant to say. That she’d watched him from afar? That she knew his laugh better than her own voice? That his sadness felt like it belonged to her? Instead, she just said, “Take care.” He gave her a small, almost imperceptible nod, then disappeared into the downpour. Alina stood there, heart racing. He knew her name.
