Kira's POV The first thing I notice when I wake up is the smell. Antiseptic. Bleach. That fake lemon scent they use to cover up the fact that people die in places like this. The second thing I notice is the pain. Not just in my shoulder where they dug the bullet out, but deeper. Like someone's pulling my soul apart with rusty pliers. The mate bond. It's stretched so thin I can barely feel Damon through it. "f**k," I whisper, trying to sit up. Big mistake. Lightning shoots through my shoulder, and I fall back against the pillows. My left arm is strapped to my chest in some kind of sling contraption. There are tubes running into my right hand, and machines beeping around me like they're keeping time for my misery. But none of that matters because through the bond, I can feel him. Damon
