Chapter 33: Carter POV

2094 Words

Dodging the dishes my mother kept throwing at me after she found my hiding spot, I ran as fast as I could. As usual, my siblings had an entirely different agenda than letting me live to see the next day. “Mother — he’s heading for the south kitchen!” someone yelled. Crash snarled in warning at the betrayal. If I had my way, I’d make her skin purple for a year after this. “Disgraceful child of mine — stand your ground!” my mother shouted, just as a fork flew past me and clanged into the brick at my feet. I wasn’t stupid enough to try and grab that weapon; I’d die before I could succeed. I bailed — decided to make a run for my estate in the woods. ‘In this damn cold? Are you insane?’ Crash howled in my head, trying to stop me from fleeing. But if I stayed, I’d be murdered by my mother.
