Chapter 3 Kelsey

1494 Words
It was pitch black but I could hear people talking. I wanted to talk but I could not. All I could see was black. “What happened to her?” I hear a male voice ask. “She fell down the stairs in our house, I think she tripped.” I hear Tommy answer. I wanted to wake up and scream at him. Tell him to get the f**k out of the room and leave but I couldnt move I couldn’t speak. I could hear beeping in the background, I must be at the hospital hooked up to machines. I felt a pressure in my chest, and then I realized I had a tube down my throat. I struggle to wake myself up and find myself fighting for air. I hear rustling and Tommy saying my name. As I open my eyes all I see is a bright light above me and then burning in my chest. I feel the tube being taken out of me and I gasp for air coughing as they pull the tube out. My eyes adjust to the light and I see Tommy standing by my bed with Jaxon. I look around the room and see other nurses looking at me. “Wh-what happened?” I gasp out. “You fell down the stairs sweetheart.” Tommy replies. “N-no I didn't.” I stutter. “Get out!” Tommy yells, everyone leaves the room leaving us alone together. I can feel my heart thumping in my chest. I feel like my heart is going to explode. The monitor begins to beep rapidly. I could feel my palms getting sweaty. “You had better shut your f*****g mouth!” He hisses at me. “I swear if you say a damn word I will make your life a living hell and you will never see the light of day again.” I nod my head at him and shut my mouth. The last thing I want is for him to get his hands on me again. I needed to figure out a way out of here without him knowing. I can try and pack my things while he is at work when I am finally discharged home. “I have to get back to work, you better not say a damn word.” As he walks out of the room and makes a left toward the elevator to head up to the plastic surgery floor. After he leaves the nurse comes back in to check my vitals. “Would you like anything to eat?” She asks me. “No thank you.” I reply, “I am not that hungry at the moment.” She nods and writes something down in my chart as she leaves the room. I sit in my hospital bed listening to the machines beep around me. My eyes start to feel heavy, I let the darkness wash over me, as I fall asleep. It felt like I had only been asleep for a few minutes when I woke up to someone skating me. “Kelsey! Kelsey wake up!” As I open my eyes I see Jaxon standing there in his blue scrubs with a concerned look on his face. He says frantically. “I have all your stuff ready to go and a friend two towns over who can house you until you get on your feet.” “What are you talking about?” I ask him with a questioning look on my face. “I know what he has been doing to you. Don't play stupid with me. I am not that dumb.” He says. “I don't know what you’re talking about, he has done nothing to me.” “Kelsey for the love of god I know what is going on. Please don't lie to me, I am trying to help you.” He says with a little bit of anger in his voice. I finally give up on trying to lie to him. I really do need to get out of here. I have been trying to figure out a way to escape and now maybe this it my way out. I can finally get away from this psycho and start a new life. Go to school and become a therapist like I have always wanted to. Get out there and help women get away from situations like mine. Tommy would never let me go back to school. He was always so controlling. He wanted me to be a stay at home mom. He had been trying to get me pregnant for years. But, I was seeing a doctor behind his back and taking birth control medication to keep from getting pregnant. There was no way I was going to get pregnant with that monster's kid. Not with his ties and money, he would be in my life forever. He would probably even try to take the child from me. I would never be free of him. I slowly get myself out of bed, stopping for a second to keep from passing out. I must have a concussion because I could not see straight as I tried to stand up. My vision starts to go blurry so I quickly sit back down trying to catch my bearings. “We have to go now, I already got some of your things packed. Tommy sent me to your house to get things for you since you are supposed to be in the hospital for a few days.” He says frantically. He helps me put my slippers on and hands me an oversized sweatshirt which I assume is his since it is bigger than me and looks like a dress on me. I fit my head through the top of the sweatshirt, and then it hits me. That smell that I know and love, the cologne I smelled on him the other day. The same one my father used to wear before he passed away. “We need to stop by my house before we leave.” I say to him. “We don't have time, we need to get you out of here before he notices you are gone, His shift is over in an hour.” He says frantically. “It will only take a second, there is something I have to grab, It is irreplaceable.” “Fine,” he replies, “but you have to make it quick.” As we leave the hospital I wave goodbye to Gloria as we walk quickly out of the hospital. She waves goodbye to me, and I can tell by the worried look on her face she knew exactly what was going on. Of course she did, there was not a single thing in this hospital that she did not know about. We walk through the parking garage to Jaxon's white Ford F-150. He opens the passenger side door for me and helps me in. I clench my side as he helps me into the passenger side. I probably had a few bruised ribs from hitting the wall so hard, and my head is pounding along with my heart. I feel like I am about to have a panic attack. I give him directions to the house, as we pull in and come to a stop I tell him, “go upstairs to the master bedroom second door on the right. In the white dresser top drawer on the right is a photo album. Also in the closet on the right hand side there is a small cedar box with a metal wolf engraved on the top. Please grab that as well.” He nods and runs into the house. He is inside for maybe ten minutes before he appears at the front door. Photo album and box in hand. He puts them in the back seat then hopes in the driver's side. “Thank you.” I say to him fighting off falling back to sleep. “You're welcome.” He replies as we back out of the driveway. We begin driving and ger onto I105 and head south. I don't know where he is taking me, but all I know is I just want to be safe and get away from Tommy. Get away from the monster I have been married to for five years. I want to be free, and I hope I can be with Jaxon's help. I look out the window at the setting sun, it is only four o’clock but it feels so much later than that. It is winter time so it gets dark sooner now. I try to stay awake, knowing with a concussion it is not good to sleep. As I drift off I hear my phone buzzing, but I ignore it and let the darkness take me. For once I felt safe, I was not afraid to fall asleep. So I gave in and let sleep come.
