Leon’s POV
After hearing my Ginger say Emerald wasn’t her wolf, things began to spiral out of control. Kane was freaking out and had absolutely refused to let anyone touch her. Someone had already done something dangerous to her, and he refused to allow anything else to happen.
Rowan had to call Delilah and ask her to calm me down, the problem was, that command didn’t work over the phone. Kane was too out of his mind. So, he called Masen, who set up a direct flight to Blue Harvest. I was glad my Ginger was still sleeping. She really didn’t like to fly.
When we landed in the human town about a 30-minute drive from Blue Harvest, I was met with Deacon and James. I wasn’t sure why James was here, but even he couldn’t calm Kane down. I had my mate pressed as tightly to my body as I could get her and even had to ride in an SUV alone because I didn’t want anyone touching her. Kane felt as if someone had defiled our mate, and as far as we could tell they had.
I had seen some s**t in my time. A lot of it. Beatings, mind control tactics, blood swaps, torture, even James and Axel shifting two and three years earlier than the average wolf. I had never seen someone swap a wolf spirit before and that was not okay with me. I didn’t like things I couldn’t understand, and I for sure did not understand how this was possible.
Pulling up to Blue Harvest, Deacon swore under his breath. Delilah was standing on the top of the steps, both arms crossed, and her bright purple eyes shone like a flare. She was pissed. Kane whimpered but held on tighter to our mate. Not even Athena would be able to pull her from us. Unless she forced me to submit, which she didn’t like to do.
James got out of the SUV first and opened the door for me to get out, while Deacon immediately wrapped his arms around his mate and kissed her mark. I silently prayed it would calm her down enough to let me explain my side of it. I was absolutely terrified of whatever the f**k was done to my mate. Magic was mostly unknown, and the idea that someone had done so much to my Ginger was mortifying.
“Leon, give her to James.” Athena growled, it wasn’t a command, but it wasn’t not a command.
Kane whimpered and pulled Reina tighter to us. James growled lowly as he opened his arms for my mate. I couldn’t openly go against both the True Beta and the Alpha and expect to come out of this alive. I handed Reina to James and watched as he took her away. Everything in me wanted to follow, but I knew I’d be killed in an instant.
“He’s just taking her to the clinic. From what I hear you won’t let anyone touch her, which means that she hasn’t had any sort of nutrition in two days. Neither have you. Go shower and meet me in the office.” She turned on her heels and walked inside the packhouse.
“Deacon, can you talk to her? I need to be with my mate. Please?” I begged. If anyone could get Delilah to agree to something it was her mate. Athena was a force to be reckoned with, but a huge puppy in Chase’s paws.
He grunted and walked inside behind his mate. I knew where to go, Delilah had kept all our rooms the same. Since Axel wasn’t here, I figured she would put Phoenix there, and then Rowan and his parents would have the usual Alpha guest rooms. I made it back to what used to be my room, and it really was the same. The dark blue walls, white carpet, white bedframe, and dark blue silk sheets. I didn’t have posters or pictures in my room because I didn’t stay as long as James, and Axel had only stayed because he found his mate. The huge window that took up half of one wall looked over the training grounds and pool.
I took the fastest shower of my life, thankfully Delilah still had clothes here since I didn’t pack any. The shirts were a little tighter than when I left, but it would do.
Reina is in the clinic, last door on the right past the double doors. Athena mind linked me. She wasn’t as angry as before, but I could still tell she wasn’t happy with me.
I half ran to the room, my mate was laying on the bed, with an IV sticking out of her arm. I trusted Delilah enough to know that she would only help my mate. It was probably just vitamins or something to help keep her healthy. I climbed into the bed next to her and whispered in her ear how much I missed her, and that we would do this together. We would figure it out.
I heard James come into the room a low growl forcing my attention to him.
“What the f**k, Leon? Last I saw you, you smelled like death and refused to leave your room.” He sat in a chair in front of the bed.
I looked down at my mate, she hadn’t moved a muscle in days. Not willingly. I had been moving her arms and legs just so they wouldn’t be as stiff when she woke up. I had even brushed her hair and wiped the visible skin down. I wouldn’t go so far as undress her.
“I got a call from Jeremy, over at Iris. Apparently that’s where she’s from. She’s had a family this whole time. There’s so much about her that I didn’t know that she couldn’t tell me.”
“What is this mess about a curse? How the f**k did she even get involved with a warlock? They avoid us, and we don’t mess with them.”
I shrugged. No one really knew. It was supposedly a boy from her high school, but Phoenix said there was no way a high school warlock was this advanced. I explained the level of spells that was on my mate. Binding spell, disconnection, and the spell that made her vulnerable to compulsion. Neither of us knew exactly what that meant, but I didn’t like it. The binding reversal spell would be broken at night during the full moon, which made all of us wolves nervous. We already weren’t excited about having magic around us, but the full moon was a very high stress time for us. Our wolves needed to run. Kane especially loved a good full moon run. He would run for hours until the sun came up then pass out for the entire day.
The hours passed, Kane grew more and more anxious the higher the moon rose. Hefought his instincts to run and be free, instead stayed next to our mate the entire night. I would rub my scent all over her, just hoping that it would bring her some kind of comfort. I knew where she was, and what she was doing, but I hoped that she could at least smell my scent and know that I hadn’t left her.
“It’s time, Alpha Leon.” Phoenix stepped into Reina’s room.
I looked at James who only nodded. He had spoken in length with Emerald, even he felt as if there was something wrong. Shifting Reina from the bed to the floor in my lap, I kissed her head before apologizing for pulling her hair out. A small moan left her lips, and I froze. I looked up at Phoenix who furrowed his brow.
“Is she waking up?” I brushed her hair from her neck and placed soft kisses up and down her neck before biting her mark gently. “Baby, come back to me. Open your eyes, Ginger.”
“Aurora.” She breathed. “Not my wolf.”
She said it! Emerald wasn’t her wolf! That’s why she didn’t recognize me as her mate, because I wasn’t. That also left another problem. If there was a dickwad out there swapping wolves, what did he want Reina’s for?
Phoenix swore, a lot. In many languages. James looked like he was about to have a freaking aneurism, a vein I had only seen once popping out of his neck. I could feel Gray growling from my position on the ground and pulled Reina tighter into me.
The warlock’s name is Markus, he was the one who Dylan went to for the spell to save my pup. When my son started getting worse, Aurora and I begged him to reverse the spell. I would give him whatever he asked for if he would just reverse the spell. All he wanted was to cast a spell. I didn’t ask what the spell was. Two years ago, I lost my memories, only to wake up feeling different. There was something wrong, and he told me that I had lost my ability to create new bonds and had lost my old ones. What he didn’t tell me is, he performed some serious black magic. The cut on Aurora and Reina’s back. It’s how he has controlled me and the other wolf into believing that we were in the right body.
I released a snarl and pulled my mate as close to me as I could. Her face was squished in my chest, and her body crumpled in my arms. This fucker had control of my mate for two years. Two whole years.
What made things change? Why are you able to remember now? James asked her.
Some weeks ago, that moron Alpha marked Reina. Guess that broke a part of the binding spell, and when she kept whining about what my mark would look like on him, I marked him back.
Phoenix looked at me, “Rowan told me you rejected her.”
I held my head in shame. That would be the worst day of my life. Forever. I nodded.
“Did you feel the bond break? Like really?” He asked me.
James growled, “Yeah, he felt the bond break. Trust me.”
“There’s something missing.” Phoenix looked down at Reina. “I need you to put her on the bed. I need to check her back.”
I wanted to growl, but James shook his head and raised his eyebrow. Challenging me to make a move. Delilah had come into the room with her arms crossed over her chest. Pissed off. I laid Reina on the bed on her stomach and pulled her shirt up. Delilah gasped.
“It’s exactly like the one Aurora has. Is that possible for them to have the exact same gash?”
Phoenix grunted and started chanting something. After a few seconds, the wound started leaking a blue light before receiving a yellow light. Soon after he stopped chanting he dumped a bright green liquid on her back and the wound closed almost instantly. Her milky white skin looked as flawless as it should have.
“I have returned the wolves to the right bodies. I must take my leave, I have some research to do. I will contact you when I find something worth telling.”
“What about Markus?” I asked, I wanted his head on a pike and to pull his skin off his bones. I hated him with everything I was.
“If you find him, kill him. It would only be doing us both a favor. I just have a feeling he wasn’t working alone. I know he has a past with Aurora and Dylan, what’s missing is the importance of Reina.” Phoenix bowed to Delilah, “Thank you for your hospitality, Alpha.”
“I will have your money wired to you within the hour, Phoenix. When will Reina wake up?”
“She should wake up within the next 24 hours. If she does not, simple smelling salts will.” He left the room in a poof. He could f*****g teleport.
James left the room first, wanting to call Brea and the kids. Then Delilah left after giving me an earful of how much bullshit I had caused. If I had gone to her in the first place none of this would have happened. Partly true, but I didn’t really care that she ripped me a new one. I sat and watched Reina take every breath. It was even and perfect, and different. Something about her was different, but I would worry about that later. I climbed into the bed with her and kissed her head.
“I love you, Ginger.” I whispered before I fell asleep.
