In the brightly lit grand hall of the castle, Vera regarded the new princess across from her in silence. The woman wore a dark red court gown, her skin alabaster, lips blood-red—a gentle grace intertwined with the quiet arrogance of nobility. Of course she’s stunning. No wonder Cassian cast me aside for her. Princess Seraphina, the Third Prince’s wife, seemed to sense Vera’s gaze. She lowered her eyes, her voice delicate and careful. "Your Grace, I came today especially to bring some good news." Vera looked up, her tone even. "Oh? And what good news is that?" So she’s really here to flaunt stealing my man, face to face? Seraphina edged closer, her manner cautious, eyes flickering with uncertainty. "You’ve always said you hated that other Sophia Green, haven’t you? Well, three days ago—she died." Vera’s expression remained unreadable. "I know." Seraphina blinked, taken aback, then relaxed with a small, apologetic smile. "Of course. With your abilities, it’s hardly surprising you found out. I only worried, since you’ve just awakened, perhaps no one had told you." Damn—almost slipped, I have to remember I’m Vera Aldrich now… Vera lifted her chin, her voice cool and imperious. "Naturally. Did you really think everyone was as clueless as you? Who am I? The Duke of Aldrich’s only daughter. There’s nothing in this castle I can’t discover if I set my mind to it." Seraphina nodded quickly, her smile humble and deferential. "Yes, yes, of course. Forgive me for speaking out of turn." Vera changed the subject, a faint smile touching her lips as she extended a gilded invitation. "In three days’ time, my father will be hosting a banquet in the castle for His Highness, the Ninth Prince. You and Cassian must join us." Seraphina’s awkwardness vanished in an instant, her eyes lighting up with anticipation and delight. "Of course, Your Grace! The Third Prince and I would be honored to attend." Vera inclined her head, lips curling in a hint of a smile. Just when I was about to rest, someone delivers the pillow. Let’s see, at the banquet—how will you two face me, husband and wife?
