The Architects

The footsteps grew louder. Elias backed away. “They found us.” Nyra looked into the darkness. “Who?” Elias didn't answer. A silver figure emerged from the tunnel. Then another. Then three more. The settlement guards raised their weapons, but Sera stopped them. “Wait.” The creatures didn't attack. Instead, the largest one stepped forward. Its body shifted like liquid metal, forming a shape that almost resembled a human. Nyra felt a strange pressure inside her head. Then a voice appeared. “WE ARE THE ARCHITECTS.” Nyra swallowed. “Architects of what?” The creature pointed toward the floor. The tunnel beneath them began glowing. Images appeared across the walls—ancient cities, oceans, forests, and civilizations that had disappeared thousands of years ago. Then Earth appeared. But it looked different. The continents were unchanged, yet enormous structures covered the planet. Nyra stared in disbelief. “You built all this?” “NO.” The creature looked at her. “YOU DID.” Nyra's heart raced. “Humanity?” The creature shook its head. “NOT THE HUMANITY YOU KNOW.” Elias stepped backward. Nyra turned toward him. “What does that mean?” Before Elias could answer, the creature spoke again. “ASK YOUR CREATOR.” Nyra froze. “Creator?” The creature pointed directly at Elias. And suddenly Nyra understood. Elias knew far more than he had admitted.
