The Last City

The clouds above Kampala began to glow. Kian grabbed Nyra's arm. “Run.” They sprinted between the abandoned buildings as a massive shadow passed overhead. The ground shook. Nyra glanced back. A triangular ship emerged from the clouds. “That's one of them,” she whispered. Kian pulled her into an underground entrance just before a beam of silver light swept across the street. They descended into darkness. At the bottom was a massive metal door. Kian entered a code. The door opened. Beyond it was something Nyra never expected. Lights. People. Hundreds of them. A hidden settlement had been built beneath the ruins of Kampala. Children ran through narrow corridors. Engineers worked on machines. Guards watched every entrance. Nyra stared. “You said this place was abandoned.” Kian shook his head. “Above ground, yes.” A woman approached them. She was wearing a dark military jacket and carrying an old tablet. Her expression changed when she saw Nyra. “So it's true.” Nyra frowned. “What?” The woman looked at Kian. “You brought her here.” Kian nodded. The woman turned back to Nyra. “My name is Commander Sera.” She lowered her voice. “And seventeen years ago, I was there when they took you.” Nyra stepped closer. “Who took me?” Sera looked toward the ceiling. “The aliens.” She paused. “Or what we thought were aliens.” Then the lights suddenly went out.
