Darkness swallowed the settlement.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then emergency lights flickered on.
Sera immediately drew her weapon.
“Everyone stay where you are!”
Nyra looked at Kian.
“What happened?”
“Power failure,” he whispered.
Sera shook her head.
“No. Something cut the power.”
She led them through a narrow corridor into a heavily secured room.
At the center stood an old black computer terminal.
Sera entered a password.
The screen came alive.
PROJECT ORIGIN — ARCHIVE 01
Nyra stepped closer.
“That's my file.”
Sera nodded.
“You deserve to know the truth.”
The recording began.
A younger Sera appeared on the screen, standing beside a strange machine.
Behind her was a little girl.
Nyra.
She was only three years old.
The younger Sera spoke.
“Subject Nyra is the only human known to have survived direct contact with the signal.”
Nyra stared at the screen.
“That can't be me.”
“It is,” Sera said.
The recording continued.
“The signal wasn't an attack. It was a communication.”
The screen suddenly distorted.
A second voice interrupted.
“DO NOT TELL HER.”
Everyone froze.
Sera immediately shut down the terminal.
Nyra turned toward her.
“Who was that?”
Sera didn't answer.
Then Kian noticed something on the floor.
A small silver symbol had appeared.
It was glowing.
They had found the settlement.
