The Thing Beneath The Station

202 Words
The Thing Beneath the Station Nyra ran through the ruined streets without looking back. Behind her, something followed. Its footsteps were heavy, but strangely quiet. Every few seconds, the buildings around her trembled. She ducked into an abandoned pharmacy and locked the door. For several seconds, nothing happened. Then her laptop switched on by itself. SIGNAL DETECTED. Nyra stared at the screen. A map appeared. A red dot was moving toward her location. “That's impossible.” The dot stopped. Right outside the pharmacy. Nyra slowly stepped away from the window. A shadow passed across the broken glass. Then came three knocks. Knock. Knock. Knock. Nyra held her breath. A voice spoke from outside. “Nyra.” It sounded exactly like her. She backed away. The door handle began turning. Nyra grabbed her laptop and climbed through a broken window into the alley. Behind her, the pharmacy door exploded inward. She ran. But the creature didn't chase her. Instead, it stood in the doorway and watched. Its eyes glowed silver. Then it whispered: “You were the one who called us.” Nyra stopped. She turned around. “What did you just say?” The creature smiled. And disappeared into the darkness.
