Nyra stared at the black screen.
PROJECT ORIGIN — SUBJECT: NYRA VALE.
Her hands trembled.
She had spent her entire life believing her parents died during the first invasion.
Now she wasn't sure she had ever known the truth about her own birth.
A sudden beep interrupted her thoughts.
Her laptop restarted.
A hidden program opened.
DEAD NETWORK DETECTED.
Nyra frowned.
The Dead Network was supposed to have disappeared seventeen years ago.
It had been the emergency communication system connecting governments, military bases, satellites, and surviving cities during the apocalypse.
She connected her equipment.
Thousands of abandoned signals appeared.
Most were nothing but static.
Then one became clear.
LOCATION: KAMPALA SECTOR 7.
Nyra stared at the coordinates.
Kampala had been abandoned years ago.
According to every surviving map, there was nothing there.
Then a voice came through her headphones.
“Nyra Vale.”
She nearly dropped them.
The voice was male.
Calm.
Human.
“You need to stop searching.”
Nyra looked around the empty rooftop.
“Who are you?”
Silence.
Then the voice answered:
“Someone who remembers what happened to you.”
The connection suddenly died.
Nyra looked toward the horizon.
A silver light appeared above the ruined city.
The same symbol appeared on her screen.
THEY ARE COMING.
Nyra closed her laptop.
If someone in Kampala knew her past, she was going there.
