What Are You Becoming

The chaos didn’t disappear all at once. It faded. Slowly. The remaining wolves moved through the clearing, restoring order. Dragging bodies. Checking the borders. But the tension didn’t leave. Because of me. I could feel it. The way their eyes lingered. The way their voices lowered. The way no one came too close. I stood frozen, my hands trembling slightly. Everything felt different. Heavier. Like there was no going back. “You need to come inside.” Aeron’s voice cut through the silence. Low. Controlled. I looked up. He stood a few steps away, watching me. Carefully. Like I was something dangerous. “I didn’t mean to do that,” I said quietly. “I know.” But he didn’t sound convinced. That hurt more than I expected. “What… what am I?” I asked. The question felt real now. Aeron didn’t answer immediately. “I know what you’re not,” he said finally. A chill ran through me. “And what is that?” His gaze darkened. “You’re not human.” The words settled heavily between us. I looked down at my hands. At the faint tremble still running through them. “I figured that much,” I whispered. Silence stretched. Then— “Walk with me.” I blinked. “What?” He turned, already moving. “Unless you want the entire pack watching you.” My face warmed slightly. I followed. The forest felt alive. Every sound sharper. Every movement clearer. Overwhelming. And yet… natural. “I can hear everything,” I said quietly. “You will,” he replied. “That’s part of it.” Part of what? I didn’t ask. We stopped near the trees. Far enough from the others. Alone. Aeron turned to me, his gaze dropping briefly to my broken chains. Then back to my eyes. “You controlled it,” he said. “I didn’t mean to.” “But you did.” My chest tightened. “That’s not normal, is it?” Aeron was quiet. “No.” I let out a shaky breath. “Great.” He stepped closer. Slowly. That pull hit me again. Stronger now. Constant. Unavoidable. My body reacted before my mind could. A slight step forward. Like something inside me was drawn to him. “You felt it again,” he said. “The bond.” I didn’t answer. “I did too,” he added. My eyes lifted. “And?” “It’s stronger.” My stomach twisted. “Why?” Aeron held my gaze. Long. Intense. “Because whatever you are… it’s not fighting it anymore.” My heart skipped. “I never fought it.” His eyes sharpened. “Yes, you did.” He stepped closer. Too close. “You just didn’t realise it.” My breath hitched. “What does that mean?” I whispered. His gaze dropped briefly to my lips. Then back to my eyes. “It means something inside you is changing.” A pause. Heavy. “And when it’s done…” My pulse quickened. He leaned closer. “It’s going to choose.” My breath caught. “Choose what?” His eyes locked onto mine. Dark. Intense. “Whether you belong to me…” My heart slammed. “…or something else.” Silence fell between us. Thick. Tense. My thoughts raced, but none of them made sense. Belong? To him? Or something else? Something dangerous stirred deep inside me at the thought. Not fear. Not panic. Something else. Something that felt almost like… recognition. Like whatever was waking up inside me already knew the answer. And that terrified me more than anything. Because for the first time… I wasn’t sure if I wanted to fight it.
