Chapter 5

Mara's nails dug into her palms, but her voice remained steady. "Go on," she said. Selena was quite satisfied with how pale she looked. "Before he jumped into the water, Lucian yelled at me to shift into my wolf form and swim back to shore. You know I've been able to swim across Crescent Lake since I was 12, so those waves couldn't trap me at all. But I called out his name," Selena said. She tilted her head, as if savoring an answer that had been proven countless times. "And he still swam toward me first. Theo was just to his back right, choking on water and crying out for his dad. Lucian looked back and saw him, knowing full well he could only save one person first. Then, he grabbed me." The world spun before Mara's eyes. She could almost see 5-year-old Theo reaching out in the waves.
