Friday is here which means three things. 1. Tonight is my date with Jackson, 2. Only one week of school left before Christmas vacation, and 3. Junior year is almost halfway over already. It seems like just yesterday I was standing at the entrance of Evermore High for the first time as a freshman and now I have just over a year an a half left at this place. I am going to have to start looking at colleges. All these thoughts go through my mind as I'm walking into 7th period and I don't even notice Mitch rounding the corner until it's too late. We collide and his books go everywhere. I look up at him in horror, my face flushed.
"I am so sorry, that was all my fault!" I say as I help him collect his things that are now all sprawled out all over the hallway.
"It's no problem" he replies with a smile.
"I should have been paying more attention to where I was going".
"Don't even worry about it. How have you been? I haven't seen you around at any of our games so far this year."
"I'm alright." I say, avoiding the last comment about basketball. I don't like to think about it too much.
"The team just isn't the same this year without him" we both knew which 'him' he was referring to. I nodded in agreement.
After I had finished helping him clean up the mess I made, I said "Well, I really need to be getting to my next class. It was good to see you and I am so sorry again for running into you".
"No problem, I'll see you around".
I've always liked Mitch although I think he may be the reason Brayden started getting into drugs and alcohol. It's really not his fault, he didn't know that by simply inviting Brayden over to his cabin that he would meet and fall into the wrong crowd at these parties. I don't blame him, I just wish things were different.
I walk into the Audio Studio, greet Jackson and take my seat. Mr. Allen walks in with an excited look on his face.
"Good morning everyone!" He greeted, "I have an exciting announcement to make! Do you remember that movie we did audio for that aired on local TV last year? Well, we have been nominated for an Academy Award for it!" We all cheer, how exciting! "These are the regional awards and we are in the student category. They will be held January 23rd in Memphis! We are all invited to go, it will be held at Graceland and we will be staying at the Graceland hotel! I will get more information out to you as I have it as well as the cost as I know that date is not too far away. This is an exciting event for both the school and the students. I am very proud of all of you and cannot wait to attend this event. No matter if we win or lose, just getting the nomination and the chance to go is huge for us. Now everyone get back to working on your current project and congratulations!"
I look over at Jackson, both of us surprised. "How cool is this?" I say, I can tell he's just as excited as I am. Graceland, a fancy Academy Award Ceremony! And all this while we are still in high school, who would have thought. I've put in a lot of work in the three years in this Audio Production class but I never thought something like this would come out of it.
"Now we definitely have to go out tonight to celebrate" Jackson says.
"I agree! I still can't believe it" I reply to him as I walk over to the equipment to grab my latest project.
After 8th period, Jackson and I walk out of the Audio Studio together. It has been a great day, I hadn't thought of Brayden once since I literally ran into Mitch today. All the excitement of the news has got me feeling like I'm walking on a cloud.
"Are we still on for 6 tonight?" Jackson asks
"Of course! Like you said, we have even more of a reason to celebrate tonight."
I am excited about our date, more now than I was before. I think I might be just starting to actually get over Brayden... Just a little bit. Jackson has been amazing. He's not been pushy or trying to move things faster than I'm comfortable with. Maybe that's the key to a relationship. Brayden and I never really had that. It was a whirlwind, we fell in love (or at least I did) quickly, had some pretty steamy make out sessions and before I knew it, it was over. I think I should really give Jackson a chance, maybe things will be different with him. I'm not sure that I could fall totally in love with him like I did with Brayden, afterall, you only have one first love but maybe there will still be something there. He's been a great friend, time to see what more we could be.
