I'm finally getting used to being back in school, it only took 3 weeks! It's not easy going from lazy summer to full on school but it is nice being back in a routine. Every day is the same, I know what to expect 5 days out of the week. I wake up at the same time, get to school at the same time, go to all my classes, have lunch with the girls, chat in the hallways, go home and do homework. Rinse. Repeat. Today is no different. Homeroom is the same, we assist with the morning announcements in the audio production studio then head to first period. Math. I've always been good at math so it doesn't really bother me that it's first thing in the morning although Geometry is a whole different ballgame.
I take a seat in my normal spot and listen as our teacher starts the lesson for today. I feel a tap on my back and I turn around. A boy that I've seen around and I know from my audio production classes passes me a note. I open it up:
"My friend really likes you but is very afraid to talk to you. Could I give him your phone number so he can message you sometime?"
I'm confused and have no idea who this could possibly be. I write back "Who?" and pass it back to him before the teacher turns back around. I later learn that the boy behind me's name is Jackson and he is best friends with Brayden, one of our basketball players. After he passes the note back to me and I learn that it is Brayden who apparently likes me I sit in disbelief for a few seconds. This can't be possible. Brayden is hot, there's no way he'd even notice someone like me much less actually like me. No, this must be a joke. High school boys can be so cruel! I respond with:
"This is a joke, there's no way Brayden Black likes me" and pass it back. Jackson assures me that he in fact does. That he actually noticed me in the halls last year but couldn't get up the courage to talk to me. I still think they are pulling some kind of prank on me. Brayden can have any girl in the entire school, why would he choose mousey little me? I think "what the heck? I'll give him my number even though I'm never going to hear from him". I write down my number, pass it back to Jackson and turn around to pay attention in class.
The bell rings and I dash into the hall in search of Rachel. Or Amelia, or really anyone, I have to tell someone. Thankfully I catch Rachel just as she's rounding the corner.
"Rachel!" I shout, she walks up to me, "you'll never believe what just happened. It was the weirdest thing. Do you know Brayden from our basketball team?"
"Of course, everyone knows Brayden. He's only the hottest guy in all of the sophomore class!"
"His best friend, Jackson, just told me that Brayden likes me. I mean, I think they are messing with me, there's no way he likes me. He can have any girl he wants"
"Are you kidding? You're gorgeous, I'm not at all surprised that he likes you! Come to think of it, I've never even seen him with a girl so I guess anything is possible. So much for last year's shy little Savannah Grace just focusing on school and getting through freshman year."
"I guess so..." I trail off. Never in my wildest dreams would I expect to be in a situation like this "now I have to face them both in my audio classes, what am I going to say?"
"Don't say anything! The ball is in his court now. Jackson said he would send you a message so let him do that." We part and head to our next class but I can't focus. Jackson's note keeps going through my head. Can this be real? No, Savannah Grace, pull it together, there's no way, you don't even know him outside of audio class. I shake my head and try to put the thoughts out. It's just a stupid prank. I assure myself as I head to my 2nd period.
