As Saloni approached the car, she noticed it right away — the familiar bright color of Shreya’s car parked in front of her workplace. The windows were rolled down, and she could hear laughter and conversation coming from inside.
She walked closer and saw Shreya sitting in the back seat, leaning in towards Arjun, both of them laughing and chatting. Samay was in the front seat, looking as casual and playful as ever. The group was in high spirits, ready for the next adventure of the day.
Shreya spotted her approaching and waved enthusiastically.
Shreya: (calling out) "Saloni! Over here!"
Saloni smiled, walking towards the car, and Shreya motioned for her to get in the front seat.
Shreya: (grinning mischievously) "Hey, get in the front seat! That way, Samay’s not stuck feeling like he’s the driver. We need to make sure he feels like he's part of the fun, not just the chauffeur!"
Everyone in the car burst into laughter at Shreya’s comment. Samay, always quick to joke around, shook his head with a playful smile.
Samay: (teasingly) "Yeah, right, like I really want to be treated like the driver. I’m much more fun than that!"
Saloni chuckled and slid into the front seat next to Samay, who was already making himself comfortable.
Saloni: (laughing, sitting down) "Alright, alright, I’ll sit in the front. I can’t let Samay feel left out!"
Shreya and Arjun shared a knowing look in the back seat before Shreya leaned forward, giving Saloni a playful wink.
Shreya: (mock serious) "See? That’s much better. Now Samay doesn’t feel like he’s been relegated to the ‘driver’s seat’!"
The car was filled with more laughter as everyone joked around. Samay glanced at Saloni, flashing a mischievous grin.
Samay: (playfully) "Don’t get too comfortable, Saloni. I may just switch seats with you later, you never know!"
Saloni: (laughing) "I’ll be ready. But, for now, I think I’ll let you take the wheel."
As the car started moving, the group fell into a comfortable rhythm, chatting and teasing each other about everything and nothing. Saloni felt the warmth of their companionship — a moment of simple joy before the busyness of the shopping trip began.
--
As the car approached the bustling mall, the excitement of the shopping trip began to build up. Arjun and Shreya could already see the crowds outside and the bright lights of the mall reflecting off the windows. It was the perfect time for some shopping and fun.
Shreya looked over at Saloni, still peacefully asleep, her head resting against the window. She smiled softly, but then her eyes flickered towards Samay. She was about to nudge Saloni awake, but Samay stopped her with a gentle hand on her arm.
Samay: (whispering softly) "It’s okay, Bhabhi. You guys go first. Start the shopping without us. I’ll stay here with Saloni until she wakes up. When she does, I’ll bring her in. Don’t worry."
Shreya raised an eyebrow, looking at Samay with a mix of surprise and appreciation. She nodded, understanding his reasoning. Saloni had been working hard all day, and if she needed some extra rest, Shreya didn’t mind giving her a few more minutes.
Shreya: (smiling) "Alright, Samay. But if she takes too long, wake her up, okay? Don't let her sleep for too long. Just 15 to 20 minutes, and then you can come in with her."
Samay nodded, a playful glint in his eyes, as he glanced over at Saloni, still deep in sleep.
Samay: (teasingly) "Don’t worry, Bhabhi. I’ll wake her up if she takes too long, I promise."
Shreya smiled, satisfied with the arrangement. She and Arjun got out of the car, eager to start the shopping. As the two of them walked towards the entrance of the mall, Samay stayed behind, keeping an eye on Saloni.
Samay: (muttering to himself with a grin) "I wonder how much longer she’s going to sleep…"
He leaned back in his seat, glancing at Saloni. The soft rise and fall of her chest as she slept peacefully made him smile. She looked so calm and content, her usual energetic demeanor replaced by an air of tranquility that he rarely saw. He couldn't help but notice how different she seemed in this moment—no worries, no responsibilities, just pure exhaustion from the busy day.
Samay: (whispering to himself, almost amused) "She really does push herself too hard. Doesn’t let anyone help her with anything…"
He reached over and carefully adjusted the air conditioning, making sure it wasn’t too cold for her. She shifted slightly in her seat but didn’t wake. Samay chuckled, watching her, her face relaxed, lips slightly parted, oblivious to everything around her. There was something about this side of Saloni that Samay hadn’t really noticed before—a softness, a vulnerability, that intrigued him.
Samay: (softly, with a playful smirk) "Bhabhi really has no idea how much work she puts in. Always the one looking out for everyone else…"
He paused for a moment, his eyes lingering on her face. The playful grin on his face faded slightly, replaced by a more thoughtful expression. Samay couldn’t help but wonder why Saloni was so determined to carry everything herself, never letting anyone else in, never asking for help, even when it was clear she was tired.
Samay: (sighing softly to himself) "Maybe she’s afraid of burdening people… or maybe she just doesn’t know how to let go. Either way, she’s always been this way. But maybe... just maybe, she needs to take a break. Just like now. She deserves it."
His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of Saloni stirring. She groaned softly and shifted in her seat, her eyes fluttering open. Samay’s eyes flickered back to her, a grin returning to his face as he watched her slowly wake up, still looking a little disoriented.
Samay: (teasingly) "Look who’s finally awake. Had a nice nap, huh?"
Saloni blinked a few times, trying to adjust to her surroundings. It took her a moment to remember where she was, but once she saw Samay, the confusion faded, replaced by a sleepy smile.
Saloni: (groggily) "Ugh, how long was I out? I didn’t mean to sleep this long…"
Samay: (mocking surprise) "Oh, just about 25 minutes. But don’t worry, I didn’t let you miss too much."
Saloni stretched her arms, feeling the tension in her muscles from sitting in the same position for too long. She looked over at the mall, now clearly in view.
Saloni: (smiling, slightly embarrassed) "I guess I really needed that nap. Sorry, I didn’t mean to be such a burden."
Samay: (grinning, playfully) "Burden? Please, you’re hardly a burden. You’re just... one of those people who doesn’t know how to take a break."
Saloni laughed lightly, a bit of warmth returning to her eyes as she glanced at Samay. There was something comforting about the way he made her feel—like he didn’t mind her being tired or needing rest. It was just a casual observation, but somehow, it meant more than she wanted to admit.
Saloni: (half-joking) "I guess you’re right. But don’t go telling anyone, okay? I have a reputation to maintain."
Samay: (grinning wider) "Your secret is safe with me, promise. Now, come on, let’s get inside before they start wondering where we are."
Saloni nodded, a smile still lingering on her face as she unbuckled her seatbelt and opened the car door. Samay followed her out, both of them now walking toward the entrance of the mall, ready to join Shreya and Arjun in the hustle and bustle of wedding shopping.
Samay: (getting out of the car and walking around to Saloni’s side) "So, Miss Wonder Woman, got yourself stuck in the seatbelt, huh?"
Saloni, still half-sleepy, tried again to unclip the seatbelt, her fingers fumbling with the mechanism. She tugged and twisted, but it wouldn’t budge.
Saloni: (muttering to herself) "What is wrong with this thing? Come on…"
Samay stood there, watching her with an amused expression, arms casually crossed. He couldn’t help but chuckle at how Saloni, the one who seemed to have everything together, was now struggling with something as simple as a seatbelt.
Samay: (mockingly amazed) "Wow, you really are something else. How do you manage to stay so composed all the time, only to get caught up in a seatbelt battle?"
Saloni shot him a playful glare, her frustration mixing with her growing amusement.
As Saloni continued to struggle with the seatbelt, she couldn’t help but feel frustrated. Her hands fumbled around the buckle, but it just wouldn’t release. With a sigh, she looked over at Samay, silently hoping he would offer some help, but he just stood there, smirking at her.
Saloni: (half laughing, half annoyed) "Seriously? Are you just going to watch me struggle?"
Samay chuckled, his eyes glinting with mischief, before walking over to her side of the car. He opened the door, leaned inside, and gently moved her hand away from the seatbelt.
Samay: (teasing) "Alright, Miss Wonder Woman. Let me show you how it's done."
As Samay leaned over to help Saloni with the seatbelt, his weight shifted slightly, causing the seat to move back. The movement was enough to push him a bit closer to Saloni, and in that moment, his body was almost directly above hers. Saloni, taken by surprise, found herself lying back in the seat, her heart racing as she looked up at Samay, who was now hovering over her.
For a few seconds, neither of them moved. The closeness between them was undeniable, the awkward tension thickening the air. Saloni could feel her breath catch, her body suddenly more aware of Samay’s presence than ever before. His face was only inches from hers, and for a moment, time seemed to stand still.
Samay’s eyes widened in realization. He quickly lifted his body, leaning back just enough to give Saloni some space. The moment of closeness was broken, but the air between them still felt charged. Both of them were trying to regain their composure, unsure of how to navigate the unexpected situation.
Samay: (slightly breathless, trying to laugh off the tension) "Uh, sorry about that. I didn’t mean to... well, you know."
Saloni, her heart still pounding, quickly pushed herself upright, trying to act nonchalant but feeling the lingering awkwardness.
Saloni: (with a half-smile, attempting to lighten the mood) "It's fine. Just... didn’t expect the seatbelt to turn into a wrestling match."
Samay chuckled, shaking his head, before finally getting the seatbelt undone. He helped her out of the car, and both of them were still trying to shake off the strange closeness that had just occurred.
But Saloni, not wanting to leave things awkward, decided to break the silence. She reached up, almost instinctively, and brushed a stray lock of Samay’s hair away from his forehead. As her fingers grazed through his hair, she couldn't help but notice how soft it felt—how his hair smelled fresh and clean. The simple act, though casual, seemed to help ease the tension between them.
Saloni: (with a playful, almost shy smile) "By the way, what shampoo do you use? Your hair... it's ridiculously soft."
Samay blinked in surprise at the question, but his lips curled into a grin. The shift in the conversation was welcome, as it allowed both of them to ease into a more familiar, lighthearted atmosphere.
Samay: (laughing lightly, rubbing his head) "Really? You want my secret? It’s just shampoo, nothing special."
Saloni, still with a playful smile, ran her fingers through his hair one last time, a subtle gesture that made the moment feel even more intimate. But as she pulled her hand back, she couldn’t help but feel that the slight touch of his hair had left something lingering between them.
Samay’s grin softened, and there was a brief moment where their eyes met, both of them aware that the conversation had taken a turn—but in a way that didn’t feel as awkward as before. It was as though the situation, however strange, had opened the door for a more genuine connection.
Samay: (with a teasing wink, trying to avoid the rising tension) "Well, now that we’ve figured out my hair routine, let’s get you to the mall before Shreya comes looking for us. We don’t want to make her wait too long."
Saloni nodded, her smile still lingering as she tried to shake off the thoughts that were quietly racing in her mind. The exchange, though casual, felt different now—a shift that neither of them could ignore.
As they headed toward the mall, the conversation drifted to more lighthearted topics, but the undercurrent of their earlier interaction stayed with both of them. Neither of them could quite put a finger on what had changed, but the moment had definitely left an impression.
