The apartment was quiet except for the low hum of the fridge. I sat on the couch, knees tucked to my chest, staring at my phone like it might bite me. Tovias last message still sat there. “You sure? I’m here if you need to talk.” I should have answered. I wanted to. But the moment I saw her name, my mind went back to Adam’s voice — low, deliberate, laced with a threat that felt like it was still hanging in the air. “I’m going to find out who he really is, No.” The words had been rattling in my skull ever since I left the office. I rubbed my temples. Jason had warned me that his life wasn’t open-book material, that keeping his name out of certain circles was for the best. I hadn’t pushed for details… because maybe I didn’t want to know. But now? Now there was a knot in my stomach
