Chapter Eleven – In the Tunnels The sergeant called for Grieve and when he came back; he told Albert the sergeant had ordered them to construct a listening gallery as a T with a shaft 11 foot deep, a 31 foot gallery and the T extending 7 foot to the left and 15 foot to the right. It took them two days to complete and when they had finished, specialist listeners arrived with the listening sticks that Albert had seen used by employees of the water board. Albert wanted to hang around to see how they listened for the enemy, but the sergeant gave them new orders to finish a tunnel which others had already started.
